View Full Version : CPU + 4890 CrossFire with a 2x120 Rad?

I've currently got a CPU only loop with a FuZion v2 on the CPU (E8600) then a PA120.2 Rad with a pair of D12SM-12s (Yate Loon Mediums) and a DDC-1T Pro pump + Petras Tech Top (although I think I need to replace the pump, it makes a hell of a lot of bearing noise).

I'm getting a pair of HD 4890s in a couple weeks, most likely factory overclocked with 1GHz Cores n Memory @ 4Ghz .. Now would I be able to add both these cards into my existing loop and still get fairly acceptable temps across the loop? I dm running my CPU at stock speeds if it means bringing temps down a tad ..

Any input appreciated .. Saaaaaafe

I thot you had gone forever... not seen you about in a while!!

Iv never watercooled before but i get the feeling (my only knowledge is thru lots of reading) but i think that might be a bit too much for a 120.2 RAD... especially if you have the GPUs clocked at a cool 1GHz (cool as in awesome not the temperature) and a 4GHz duel... not that the 45nm are heat monsters but still... Plus i wouldnt bring down the cpu to stock speeds for the sake of temps, that will cripple the 4890 crossfire sexiness!!

<----Remember, no actual watercooling experience....

I'm not an expert, but I think the watercooling guru's around here will advise you to run two loops if you can. You might be able to get away with adding another radiator and running them in series, but the best bet will be 2 loops if you can afford.

Yea, you gonna need more rad for sure. At least a 120x3 total, best bet is get another 120x2 and add it in the loop. Actually best bet is two loops, but try more raddage first.

yes i would put in another 120.2 rad in there. 2 loops would be ideal BUT it's not a huge deal. you have a strong pump so it's all good.

Not quite gone, just lurking in the background :-P lol ..

Adding a 2nd loop would be far too coslty at this stage, a 2nd RAD on the other hand might be do-able. I'd have to mount it externally because spaceis already tight enough in my CM Stacker.

Would I run the 2nd RAD after the CPU or in between the two cards? Also goin Push/Pull on the RADs... Is this going to help much?

Cheers for the replys guys

Well, if you can wait until the end of the month for my RMA'd 4890 to get here, I will be able to tell you
Granted I do have an extra 1x120mm rad to go along with the 2x120mm rad

doesn't matter where in the loop the second rad goes. make the loop shorter without kinks before loop order.

Try it without Push/Pull first. If you need more cooling go P/P. I think some decent HS 25mm thick fans would be enuff tho. Don't need speed demons, just good ones.

I had this up, good fan review.

Since you're gonna have to go external and you have a full sized case, i'd HIGHLY recommend a MCR320 for your second rad. Jab-tech has them on sale for $52 and that's only $10 more than a 220. While another 220 would most likely be fine, a 320 would give you room to spare and grow.

I know mine is a little different, but I dropped my 4870 into the loop (we know how hot they run) and I barely noticed a difference, if any.

Rite .. I've got it all roughly planned out. I might get a new pump, was thinking Laing DDC Top/w Reservoir (http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=802{1}33{27}154{26}14 7) + the Laing DDC1+ Ultra 18W (http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=77_74&products_id=473). Then the GPU Blocks, EK-FC4890 CF (http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1383{1}33) in Plexi. For my 2nd Rad I'll just get another PA120.2 .. I might get a PA120.3 if my buget can stretch and then I'll replace all the fans on both rads with YL D12SL-12 for a bit more peace of mind ..

Okay, so far I've got ...

Laing DDC Top/w Reservoir + the Laing DDC1+ Ultra 18W
PA120.3 + "Performance" Shroud + 3x YL D12SL-12s
3ft of Tygon 7/16" Clear tubing

That just leaves the waterblocks (EK-FC4890 CF - Plexi), some more UV coiling and the cards to come :-P .. I'll start a new thread for Round 2 of my watercooling when I've gt everything together.

Hi Anubis , I have an AMD Phenom II X4 940 being cooled with a Swifttech MCR320 Rad and I am getting wb's for my 2 ATI 4890's next month . I am getting one more Switech MCR320 Rad for the 2 4890's and run them inbetween cpu and gpu's . Sidewinder has the MCR320 Rad for $49.95 tell Gary Stofer there that rocky9mm sent you and he will take good care of you http://http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/ Dont go with any smaller Rad for your gpu's !!!

I'll keep that in mind rocky ;-) saafe .. I got a new PA120.3 for £50 so not bad, keep an eye on my 'WaterCooling Round 2' thread, pics & such to be added in the next couple days.

Okay Anubis sounds good brother I'm looking forward to see them and after I get my blocks for my 2 ATI 4890's ( I have my second MCR320 Rad ready ) I'll put some pic up with ya bro :attn:
