"Pri Master hard disk: S.M.A.R.T Status BAD,Backup and Replace"
What I get when I turn on my computer. I disabled the S.M.A.R.T. warning in my BIOS, so it goes around it, but still a little worrisome. I have a hard time believing my hard drive is about to fail, it's too coincidental I got this error message on the first bootup after undid my raid, and the fact that my drive was manufactured less than 1 year ago. I downloaded some thing to diagnose my drive, and this is what I get

Other hard drive is fine. Is there anyway to fix this?

nope thats the exact same thing that happened to my 2tb drive it kept giving me that smart error untill it finally died it only lasted about 2 days after the errors started... you should start backing up your data asap

That drive is the one that the OS and Programs are on, all my storage stuff is on another drive, as well as an external one that I backup every so often. So if it does go out, won't really loose anything important.

You could run Spinrite on it to try and map out the bad sectors. I'd probably RMA the drive myself. The fact that the BIOS and that app you used both indicate a failing SMART attribute, they should RMA it no questions asked...

Since it is WD hard drive, I'd head to http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?lang=en and look for the right tool, Lifeguard Diagnostic to download and test it on your HD. It should report something and if your hard drive is still under warranty, you should RMA it ASAP.

S.M.A.R.T. data isn't passed through when in RAID, so it isn't failing "after you broke the RAID". My guess is that it has been having issues, the data was just not being passed on. There are some controllers (I think) that can/will still read the information; I believe the Areca 1220 in my main machine and my Perc 5/i in my server both can. I saw that option when I used on the onboard RAID.

Thanks Thid, that makes sense. Was wondering if it was something such as that, that with the raid it just wasn't noticing it. Sure is now, I'm getting "OMG YOUR HARD DRIVE IS FAILING!!!" errors every 10 minutes in Windows. HD is still under warranty, manufacture date is 11/08. Looks like I'll condense down to 1 HD tomorrow, and contact WD for a RMA.

WD's RMA procedure is cake - they even offer UPS shipping from the RMA site!!! Pay, Print, Box, and go!!!
The Areca cards will indeed report SMART data but ONLY through their web interface - Even these types of cards won't report SMART to the OS Drivers. All the OS sees is a big blob of HD space :)

:cool:That is what I thought. I knew both did not pass the information to the OS; no programs picked it up.

I'm not surprised that it failed like that when they do fail, because when Western Digitals fail, it's usually with bad sectors, which was a trend with Western Digital HDDs made between 1995 and 1998.
They usually don't fail silently, because Western Digital in the past, has had issues with the platters and/or the heads and not the firmware.
I just hope that bad sectors aren't becoming a trend for Western Digital again!
Because the current Western Digital HDDs seem to be made superbly!
It seems that especially 2002 and later Western Digital HDDs were made good.
