View Full Version : So Steam is quirky in win7...

It has been almost a year since I tried to run steam games, so I decided to d'l it again and after the steam install there was a survey that I participated in, and when it gathered my system info steam reported my OS install date as September 21,1969?
Anybody else see this?
I started d'ling HL2 last nite, and it is reporting my dl speed as 72k~, and I decided to let it go overnite...when I get up, the interface is still reporting 60% complete.
So I was going to grab the title bar and move the steam window, and win7 reported it as unresponsive..so I restarted Steam, and I'm now resuming the d'l for HL2.
I am a very slow typist and in the time it has taken me to type this out, the d'l has only gone two percent more.
Either Steam is reporting the download speed wrong, or HL2 is a huge d'l.
That is 2 of the quirks I found so far.
If the D'l ever finishes, I will play with HL2 fer a while, and report back.
Cheers everyone,
Doc

Now Cryostassis plays like crap on W7 but i dont have it as a steam game.I just added the short cut to steam.Im gonna toss one of my old WD 160gb HD's in and try it on Vista or XP.To see if its W7 or just a crappy coded game

HL2 finaly d'led...now it's updating and it's taking just as long as the install did..anyhow I played a little up till I tried to go into a room where a bot was standing, and I see this thingy saying AI dissabled, and I could not get through the door.
When I gave up, and quit the game is when I noticed that the game was updating.
So I guess I'll play some more Solitare.

I'm not sure how big the download is, but Steam says that HL2 takes up 3.45GB installed. So that could take a little while to download. I download at 1.2MB/s and it still took a little while to download.

I am on vista and it is doing this for arma. once I downloaded it i looked at the update history and it says it was updated in '69. when it opens there is just half a screen and the stuff that is not black is unreadable. I don't know where to look for a update or how to fix this problem. Any suggestions?

yea, I figured that the D'l was huge in the 2gig range.
What's the deal with 1969? I mean windows wasn't even a dream then

steam was wonky for me when i first started using it on windows 7 (this was about a week after the RC was released). after a few windows/steam updates it works without a hitch for me now.
as far as the original HL2 goes on 64-bit windows 7, as far as i'm concerned it's basically unplayable. after the first couple stages in the game the AI crashes and all the NPCs just stand there. : \ didn't have that problem with the 32-bit RC.

I get some crashes with Tf2 from time to time only when I first load up the game. Or when I sometimes minimize it takes a long time to go back into the game.

Im Using W7 64bit RC and this says Vista Professinal and install date 12/31/1969..lol WTF
HL2 64 bit has problems. You can disable the ai and enable it again and it will work again, but the ai will keep shutting off. Valve should not have released 64bit hl2. We cant even install 32bit version on 64 bit os. B.F.S.
Also, what date do you guys have set in your bios? I havn't botherd with W7 yet (gonna end up waiting for official release) so i don't have this problem.

Cryostasis seems to work fine for me on XP 32 Pro. I also launch it from a Steam shortcut.

No issues with HL2 x64 on Win7 RC here. Actually I've been surprised, I haven't had an issue with any game yet, even Freespace 2.
Left 4 Dead runs fine for me, but Defense Grid is extremely slow. I did update DirectX but haven't tried things again.

64bit mode is working just fine for me in Win7 RC 64bit. But if you need to disable it, just right click your shortcut and goto properties, the in "Target" field, add "-32bit"
Or if you launch directly from the Steam games list, then right click on Half life 2 and goto properties, then click "Set Launch Options" and put "-32bit" in there.
Bingo bango, 32bit mode.
