Ok, check sig for current set up as I'm pretty limited on funds. As such, I need to re-use as much equipment as possible.
Anyway to the point, I just got a $150 gift cert from work for good customer service. Bad thing is, the only place I can use it that has puter stuff is BB. (sucks, I know.) So here's my dilema:
Would it be worth it to use the cert for a PIII-1000eb for only $30 outta pocket (I know they're WAY overpriced, but $30 for 1.0 aint bad and if I wait till after the 27th, it might be less.) and get a new mobo like the Abit ST6 off of pricewatch for around $80?
I look forward to everyone's thoughts on this.

I know I could get a slotket, but I was considering the ST6 for two reasons, 1) get away from the slot1 form factor and go to the 370, although I've heard rumors that is on its way out now too, and 2) I could upgrade to the newer Celeron/Tualitin chips at some point in the not too distant future. (whew, what a run-on sentence, sorry!:beer: )
Heres my recommendation:
Abit ST6
1.0a Tualatin
Then sell your rig which will cover the price of the chip or motherboard and you will the rest of the money towards cooling or something.

Newegg has celeronA 1GHz for $74, if BB has good mobos, I would get that and a mobo from BB. I think the celeronA 1GHz is probally better that the p3 1GHz. Does BB even carry mobos?

The 1.0a Tualatin will definitely mop the floor vs the P3 Coppermine series.
Listen to Yodums....I taught that kid everything he knows...lol. Seriously, if you're getting a new processor to upgrade a P-III 700, then the Tualatin is a good choice (of course you'll need a mobo that supports the Tualatin too). Best Buy sometimes has Asus motherboards, but I don't know what models. But you're also right about Intel trying to phase out the socket 370 by the end of 2002. They want to switch completely over to P-4's eventually. If you're a hardcore gamer, why not get a better vid card from BB and then save up and/or use the income tax refund for a good mobo and CPU.
You seriously did batboy when I was a newbie here and dazed around here with confusion! :D
By the way batboy how about teaching me everything you know as your a geolist!!!!

Well here's the problem, my local BB doesn't carry mobos. Period. As far as processors, they don't have any of the newer Tualitin chips. Only the old celermines. Thus the quandry....

Ha, my mom said she'll spot me money for a new mobo when she gets the income tax refund, first part ever bought not by me. I just bought a celeron 1GHz coppermine for about $80 and I know I'm going to get a celeronA 1GHz, as soon as I find a job, for the same price I spent on the coppermine. Idk, maybe I can get enough money from my 1GHz on ebay and just pay the dif for a tualatin. Well, anyway, try go for the tualatin if you can, you'll have fun with such an easy OCer.

Yodums, thanks for the input. Looks like I'm gonna have to wait at least a few weeks to sort it all out. I do like your suggestion and will more than likely go that route. Thanks again.

Here is wut u should do, Forget about all that intell crap, and get yourseld a duron 1.2 or better yet an athlon. Its a lot cheaper and faster.:D

the best buy near me sells mobo and cpus, i dont know if they have the tutalains but ive seen some 1.1ghz cumine processors there. ask at yoru local best buy if they have a product in another store and they will be more than happy to transfer it to the one near you so you can buy it.

Please refrain from attaching that. It really does slow the boards down, esp for those on a dial up connection.
If the internet is slow, sometimes it NOT their problem. Not everyone is fortunate enough to live in an area that offers cable or DSL hookup. Some are stuck with a 56K, or nothing. Have a bit of courtesy, please.

shouldnt u only attach a message if its a helpful picture (of hardware, screenshot, etc.)? and it isnt only my problem, you are wasting forum space. that picture takes up room on the forum computer.

an 1.2 duron will not beat a celeron 1.2. Accually, a the celeron 1.2 is almost dead even with the althon XP 1.5, when clocked at the same speed. I'll search for the tests, and I'll edit them in as soon as I find it.
One more thing, please don't post pointless pictures, they have no purpose, and they slow down the page from loading. Oh yea, it's also my fault I have 56k? I guess I should just have the phone company replace my old lines so I can get dsl. Please, if you post pointless posts they will be deleted by mods, and in the long run it is not worth it. Just don't act like a 10 yo, be conciderate. Don't come into the intel forum to flame someone for having intel.

BigRed, thanks for the suggestion. The closest store to me is about an hour away and trying to get someone on the phone, let alone someone that is knowledgeable is tough at best. I'll check it out though.

I would like to see that celeron beating athlon xp:p
Durons compete with p3 processors, celerons barely come close to durons. I have seen all bm on madonion, and i never seen a celeron come close to a duron clocked at same speeds, same goes for sandra benchmarks.:D

1) the new celeron is a p3
2) it will overclock WAY WAY higher than any duron

You want real world bench marks, go buy a copy of MAYA, and see which out of the two will be standing on top at the end of a 10 hour rendering session.

i have to agree with Mr. B on this one, don't take it so serious guys:) i believe Goku only tried to help people out, and in his opinion, amd is the best, and who could blame him for that? but, yeah, stop talking about your duron 1.2 and stuff for it offers "NO' room to oc period, and facts DO speak for themselves. anyway, not good to flame anyone, keep your respect towad others, and don't sunk to the those amd fan boys' level...... :D

The problem is that I don't belive he is trying to help. All his posts (not just in this thread), are about him, what he has, and how much better it is. I have yet to see him contribute anything useful in the Intel CPU's section.
