i want to connect 2 pc directly between two NICs. I have the two nics setup with custom static IPs and the connection works. I want full access control to one through the other, but not sure the best way to do that. i tried a remote desktop connection, but its extremely slow. is there a better way to do this?

Need more info: what actual bandwith, what latency on the network connection? What kind of program do you want to execute remotely, game or office or something else. Which of the dozens of remote desktop programs and protocols did you try?

Remote Desktop is pretty quick, from my experience. If you're having issues with RDC, then you'll probably still have problems with whatever else you decide to use.

Not enough info, but I would hazard that the duplex and speed are different on the computers.

For the best connection at the fastest speed set them both for Full Duplex and the max speed on the card that is slowest, that is if both are 100 MBPS then set them both to 100 MBPS. But if one is a Gig and the other is 100 then set them both at 100, if you are lucky you have both Gig MBPS.

And then set the NetBios on under the WINS tab on Advanced of the IP settings.

I use Dame Ware and RDC at 100 Full and they fly, actually it is almost the same as turning around and working on the servers directly... :)

Good luck with setting it up.

Thanks, after the tips things are a little better. i set the card to full duplex 100Mbit (as only one is Gbit) and setup netbios. its still a little slow to play HD video over. according to task manager i only utilize 50% bandwidth MAX. maybe 60% if transfering files. but reading a video file i only get about 10%. whats that about???
