is it true that wd black 640gb is faster than the older 74g raptor (8mb cache) ? even faster than the 500gb blacks?

Access time, I dont think so (unless you run raid0 w/ a matrix slice, then its just as fast as the new vraps in access time, or close to it w/ 3-4 drives), but in other fields yes, I believe its faster and just sky-rockets when raided.

Especially with 4 of the 1tb version in a sliced RAID0 (http://thideras.com/images/benchmarks/hard_drive/raid0.png) :)

The throughput should be higher, the RAID card is actually the limit there >.>

If you were to make a partition of equal size to an older 8 or 16MB Raptor the access times can come close - I don't have a Caviar black to benchmark atm but on a Caviar Blue I get sub-9ms access times on a 200GB partition.

wasn't thinking of doing raid or partitioning it, but if flat out its faster, then i would gladly retire my 74gb raptor and get a 640gb black instead :)

Access time will be slower w/ the 640gb black. Throughput should be about the same, maybe slightly more.

Yeah, blacks are nice solid drives but I'd still think a couple raptors would be faster for an operating system, if you were thinking in raid regards.

Not sure if 4X1TB Blacks on a RAID card would be faster, I have 4x1TB RE3's made for RAID on an Areca 1210 for storage.

I tried using them for an operating system for a short while, even sliced em up and put a small operating system on front, and went back to 3x150 Raptors just in Matrix and left them on the RAID hardware card for storage.

Running 5x150 Raptors there now for system, I maybe should have just went SSD by now but I'll get there someday :)

the 1tb drives will be way faster than the 74gb drives he posted...but the 150gb raptors you have are faster than the 1tb drives...

and i would take wd640's over those 74gb raptors any day...i used to have both ;)

so, flatout, no raids or whatsoever, jst straight up single drives, wd 640gb blacks > wd raptor 74gb (8mb cache) for daily use and by > means way better/fast bootup/loading of apps... right?

I just ordered a WD black 640 yesterday, and I am glad to hear that they are fast :D

well so far ive read that for bootup/loading of apps/games, the older raptor is still faster :|

I own a 150gb raptor and a 1tb WD black the black feels much faster
In HDtune the 1tb was 52 mb/sec 111.2 mb/sec accesstime: 12.4 Burst rate: 141.1 mb/sec
the 150gb raptor was 62 mb/sec 93.3 mb/sec accesstime: 8.9 Burst rate was 101 mb/sec
both of these drives have vista 64 bit with a full install including games and was run from the desktop of the wd black.
from a personal feel the black is much better for a main os drive and I want more :)

I'd go by what he stated in regards to the 74Gb Raptors, those I'd never tried.
