View Full Version : Page file question
Everyone always to move the page file to a different drive from the OS. I've always been curious how much of an impact this makes, especially when moving the paging file from a high speed drive to a lower speed drive. For example, would I see any performance benefit to moving my paging file from my VelociRaptor onto the WD Caviar Black?

which OS are we talking about here?
I dont think the speed of the drive really matters. The reason it is suggested is to separate the paging from the OS read/writes.
As for performance, it used to be an issue on slower machines, I dont know about with todays hardware. I still put the page file on a separate drive though.
Well, Vista/Windows 7. Didn't really think it made much difference.

it wont make a big difference... dont worry about it

That's what I assumed. I've played around with it on same/different drives and was never able to tell any difference. Was wondering if anyone else did.

It may still get used by the clunky Windows OS even with 6Gb of RAM, but I'd say put it anywhere it's convenient, it won't be used much.

Put your page file on a non-OS drive if you are running an SSD.

Yeah, I put my pagefile on my storage RE3's myself, seems to work well :)

I turned my page file off in XP32 (so 3gig cap), i didn't notice the slightest difference in performance of anything.
