I just upgraded my cpu and memory today and I'm having problems with intermitant bootup.
Motherboard ASUS Rampage Formula Bios 0902(latest). Bios on auto.
CPU Intel Q9650
Memory OCZ Platinum Edition PC2 8000 P/N OCZ2P10004GK (4 x 2GB total)

When I plugged all 4 memory sticks in it would not boot up, took one out it would boot every now and then. Seemed to run fine till I turned it off, then it would take a few on offs with the bios button to get it to boot again. Went down to 2 sticks and booted fine. I know that this memory is 1000 and not 1066 but what is the problem? Do I have bad memory? Doesn't seem to be the CPU's fault. Help please?

The BIOS may be defaulting the NB strap to 333/1066 at the default FSB of 333 MHz. If this is the case then you my need to increase the vNB and / or Vdimm, since the RAM is rated at 1000 MHz. Try manually setting the four primary timings to their rated 5-5-5-15-2T (DRAM Command rate) at the recommended Vdimm; probably 1.9v (all sub-timings on AUTO). You could also change the FSB : DRAM ratio to 5:6 (333/800 NB strap) for an effective 800 MHz at an FSB of 333 MHz, possibly w/ 5-4-4-12, 4-4-4-12, or 4-4-4-15 timings... something along those lines anyway; basically tighter primary timings. Also adjust tRFC to at least 54 - 55.

I took the OCZ platinum 8000 back and got the OCZ fatl1ty mem, the 1066 works so much better and boots every time.

That's because the BIOS defaults to a 333/1066 strap, resulting in a 5:8 FSB : DRAM ratio; an FSB of 333 MHz w/ an effective DRAM freq. of 1066 MHz. The DDR2-1000 would have worked, but it required adjusting the RAM timings or the default strap.
