Hello

I have been running my PC with 1 disk. Now I am thinking of going into RAID 0 for better gaming. What do I need to buy to do this?
My mobo is EP45-DS4, present drive is Samsung HD753LJ 750GB.

thanks

krishan

It's isn't absolutely neccesary to have an identical drive to do RAID0, but that is the best way to do it. So all you need to do is order another Samsung HD753LJ 750GB. Then install it and enable RAID in the BIOS. Then you set it up in the RAID setup upon boot. It will erase anything on the drive currently, so be sure to have a backup.

I don't need a RAID controller card/ Is that for mobo's that did not have RAID ability?

Correct, your motherboard already has a RAID controller. The only advantage of having a separate controller card is that you can move that RAID array from one machine to another without trouble.

That and a quality RAID card can be faster with the correct drives. But I completely agree that for the OP he would be best served by sticking with the on-board set-up.

OP take a look at the Matrix RAID sticky at the top of the page. It is a really slick set-up and with the size of those drives you certainly have the room. It will noticeably speed up your system.

thanks guys

I might still consider the option which is a raptorvelico 150GB 10000rpm drive, from what I have read, there is very little difference for gaming unless you have about 3 or 4 in RAID 0 then its better else a fast single drive is good enough

well, game loads aren't always much faster, but you will definitely just notice an overall increase in performance just using the system for normal tasks.

ok, just flying off at a tangent, does it matter how you install a disk, vertical or horizontal espeically if its a Western Digital VelociRaptor

naah....shouldn't matter. I think I remember hearing that back in the day you wanted to have them installed horizontally, but I cannot imgine that is the case today. There are so many cases that have vertical mounts for drives.

I would go with the VR. In general I am not a big fan a RAID and would suggest a VR or quality SSD with a big data drive any day.

Umm it seems to me 2 spinpoint f1 in raid 0 is not only cheeper but works the sane if not better unless I had read it wrong
