Sometimes when i boot my hard drive starts making a little clicking sound, click.....click.... ect, and its really really slow like this, i mean it takes the bios like a minute to detect it, and other times it fine. The drive is a 40gb IBM 60gxp. You think it could be going bad on my, iv had it for about 8 months now.

I had the same problem, shortly after posting that, I had to bury that Western Digital.

Backup now.

Indeed, your drive is going to die VERY soon, the "click of death"..it is only a matter of time :( back up while you still can!

Agreed, its on its last leg, back up as they said.

With the RMA, I am pretty sure that you still can with WD. Ive had 3 different drives crash that were WD and under a year old still, RMA'd them all with WD no problems.

w00t!~!

Broke a 1000 posts again :p

Well il have to wait and see. Its working fine today, but yesterday it was doing it for i little while. Also, sometimes the bios wont detect it, that could be related.

IBM drives have a 3 year waranty though, so i should be able to get it replaced.

its a 60gxp - which overheats very easily, you need a case fan or something to lower the temperature of this baby, otherwise it may permanently stop working like thousands of others have experienced with this harddisk.

my moms comptuer was doing that same exact thing!
but for some reason it stopped now.... its an old loud 6gig and anoying, and that clicking SUCKED! it is so anoying!
but it did that only during the boot.... it was like 4 months ago that it started and i guess it must have stopped?

If you ever hear a hard drive clicking it is unquestionably backup time. You might have minutes or months till failure, but clicking is never good.

click...click...click...click...BOOM!

get an extra case fan before the boom

My 60GXP used to make a clicking noise. Several occasions actually. I want and ran Win2k's checkdisk utility and it fixed a whole bunch of corrupted windows files and it quit.

Hi there I have the same drive, same probs do what I did head over to IBM`s site in the downloads section they have a utill that tests the drive, lists any faults and generates you an RMA number if a fault is found. I have already RMA`d a 10 gig udma 33 IBM drive, week later I had a 15gig udma100 back from them :) also IBM`s warranty on hard drives is 3 yrs, I also had no receipt or proof of purchase, and I dont think they ever asked. hope this helps.

I get this problem when accessing my CD RW drive. The hard drive seems to spin up, then down, with this weird click sound.

I have an IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30GB. Only started to click when I installed my new CD ROM drive, thought it was because of some IDE channel conflict, but not sure how to fix it...:(
