Ok wait, hard to follow your question line.

Modem from ISP, does it have a network connection that you would plug your PC into?

A bit confusing reading your post. It sounds like you have an AT&T 5100 Speedstream, which only has one ethernet port. The modem then goes to one of the 4 ports in the back of your Belkin router.

If this is correct, then your Modem is most likely doing the PPPoE and your router is in Automatic -DHCP mode. If this is the case, there is no problem with this working. (Unless you are in the rare case where a double-NAT does not work correctly for your software)

My first thought when you say it drops connection is the router is not able to handle large downloads at the same time.

Two things you could try easily:

1)Switch your modem to Bridge mode and then have your router handle the PPPoE. This turns the modem into a "dumb-modem" and allows the router to handle all of the connection info for your internet.

2)See if there is a firmware update for your router or try a 3rd party firmware and see if it can handle multiple downloads better.

Yes, that would work just fine. Set your modem to bridge mode using these instructions. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/15835

Then, go to your router and change it to handle PPPoE. I believe it is under the WAN settings menu. It should have options like DHCP, Static, PPPoE, PPPoA, ect.

Make sure when you do this that you know your login info for AT&T. Last thing you want to do is switch your modem to bridge and then not know the username and password to type into your router. HEHE
