View Full Version : How hot is too hot?

I am running an Athlon XP 1600+ at 1.42Ghz. It's sitting at 45C after being on a few days and doing some video compression. It's in an Epox mboard with 256M DDR.
The weird thing is when I put the chip in the board and booted up, it was set at 1Ghz by default. I had to raise the clock speed just to get it to factory spec. Any thoughts on that?
But my main question is: at what temperature should concerns be raised? 113F seems hot to me, but is the CPU even sweating?

Which Epox board is it exactly?
Also, is 45C you idle temp or load temp?
If it's a load temp it isn't too bad. As a general rule, temps in the 50 degree range are considered undesirable when overclocking but not really dangerous. That chip can handle much higher temps. (you don't want higher temps, just saying it can handle them.)
What heatsink/fan are you using to cool and what is your configuration for moving air through your case. Also, what are your case temps and ambient room temps. Answers to these questions will help us help you more.
Also, this should probably be in the cooling forum. No biggie since your new here, but it helps to post in the proper topic area.
Welcome to the forums, hope you enjoy em' :)
im not sure of this, but i think 90c is the max that a athlon can reach before it goes up in smoke.
but 50c is not a good load temp to have.
i say anything 40c or lower is good, and 45c is ok, but lower would be better :)
wecome to the forums. you might get more help in the amd or cooling section.

Welcome to overclockers fourms.
if your using a retail HS/F and the thermal pad 45°C isn't all that bad. you could always add case fans or get some cheep thermal proxy (like the radio shack stuff) or ASII if your using the thermal pad.

Can anyone tell me how hot is too hot for a production server with an Intel cpu? PIII1.2
I put a temp gauge on the heat sink, and it's currently over 105F (over 40C?). There is no mobo cpu sensor, for some reason Dell power edge 2550s don't have one, at least that I could find.
From my understanding that's just the heat sink temp and the actual cpu temp can be a 10C higher, which concerns me.
The reason these temps are so high is because my company seams to think that VCR tapes take priority to the servers, so we've been moved into a very poorly ventelated room which the temp is over 95F, and this is Minnesota in the middle of winter! Stupid management.

Actually my Athlon 800 ran at 96C for a while, acording to ASUS Probe (Which you can trust) using the onboard temperature monitor (Which reports wrong).
Why do they even bother having a onboard diode if it reports the wrong temperature(s).. d o h !
Well, My 1800XP is at 66C so... my old A7V w. 800mhz went down to 46C when i replaced the HSF/FAN.
