...they own 50% of the Beatles catalog.
He does not own the right to the entire Beatles catalogue. For example, the family of the late George Harrison own songs he wrote, including "Something," and Sony music owns 50% of the catalogue after Jackson sold it to them because he needed the money.

I wonder how much money 50% produces for them.

Enough, because didn't Jackson put a portion of it up another portion of it as collateral for a 200mil loan?
Well, it wasnt enough to keep him out of debt.

Just imagine how much further he'd be in dubt if he didn't have it. I still can't figure out how you'd spend 20-30mil more then you take in each year!

Yes, because music rights have everything to do PS3 sales...
Sony's hardware and media divisions are mutually exlcusive; the fact that they make money in music and movies does not take away from the fact that they're losing money in their [once profitable] games division.
It's no different for Microsoft, either. All the OEM Windows & Office sales in the world cannot amelioerate the once-great losses on the Xbox and continued red-ink for the Zune.

Yawn... (Rainless to Decepticon yawn number 50 ;) )
What it means is this: Neither Microsoft nor Sony are in any danger of going out of business no matter HOW much money their gaming divisions lose.
It just doesn't matter. Not at all. Do you honestly believe Microsoft lost enough money on the Zune to really give a damned?
They can create a new money-losing Zune every year and STILL not care. Same with Sony. The damned PS2 is still turning a profit (my uncle just bought his sixth after his fifth went south on him. He should probably stop carrying it around in a gym bag...) And no matter how much the PS3 is losing... it isn't losing enough. Games are still selling at a respectable pace. The console is now selling more than ever, and if they need a couple of billion to shore them up until 2012... they know where they can get it.

Actually the PS3 console sales year over year are down.

You're wrong.
What you're looking at is a VERY misleading article. You aren't seeing "year-over-year" sales... you're seeing JANUARY sales.
I wasn't talking about how well the PS3 has been doing in JANUARY... I was talking about how well it's been doing overall.
This is the great problem with gaming journalism: Half these guys are 14 year old kids and the other half are idiots.
The whole "journalism" aspect becomes completely subjective (which journalism should never, EVER be) and facts are either misused or tossed out of the window.
Somewhere in the neighborhood of 90% of all gaming news is garbage. And I take personal offense at the way that facts are misappropriated. (This has nothing to do with you obviously. I was just about to make a separate thread about this and figured why not post it here?)

So I show some google results of "year+over+year+PS3" showing that PS3 sales are not selling more than ever, and your response is they are misleading after clicking one of the links dealing with just January.
Here is an article based on May09 NPD's number's since the one you clicked on about January wasn't current enough. http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=3960
So show me where NPD supports this statement.
The console is now selling more than ever
Because none of the consoles are selling more then ever now.

Still not sure I understand your point. The VGCHARTZ link (and vgchartz is probably the least reliable gaming news site on the internet.) The link above shows a 3% increase in sales going from Apr 09 to May 09. Unlike most of vgchartz, these figures may actually be real since they site NPD...

My point is that year over year the sales are down for all the consoles, and I used that article because it used NPD.
They may be up 3% from last month, but they were 37% down from this time last year which in my opinion is a better way of showing overall how things are going. So I guess it all depends on how you look at it.
Back to the thread title, they need a pricecut if they want to get back to last year's numbers.

The 360 had a price cut... and they aren't back to last year's numbers.
So what makes you think a PS3 price cut will bring them back to last year's numbers?

Because continuing to sell it at the same price sure isn't going to help? I could site how sales of the 360 jumped when they did their cut remaining above the PS3?
Activision thinks they need a price cut
Sony should beware — Activision chief is not simply playing games (http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article6531367.ece)
They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony.” Ask when and he says: “When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too.” Sounds like Sir Howard Stringer, Sony's chief executive, is going to have to call Mr Kotick pretty fast. Most likely just threats, and sensationalized by the press, but it was said.
The 360 had a price cut... and they aren't back to last year's numbers.
Actually the 360 is the only console that is higher year over year from the start of the year. If you want me to dig up the NPD numbers I could probably find them, but I've read this on many sites and will just provide this link. I hate using this link, but MS does site NPD.
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2009/may09/05-28XboxGrowthPR.mspx
REDMOND, Wash. — May 28, 2009 — Microsoft Corp. announced today that sales of Xbox 360 consoles have passed the 30 million mark globally, with its Xbox LIVE community swelling to more than 20 million active members. After the biggest year in its history in 2008, Xbox 360 achieved the highest percentage growth in hardware sales of any console so far in 2009, up 28 percent over the previous year.

Yea, didn't uncover that the 360's sales were doing that well since this was a PS3 discussion, then I went to fact check thisThe 360 had a price cut... and they aren't back to last year's numbers.
So I'd like to recant that all console sales are down. 360 Sales are up year over year. Pretty good on MS's part with the way the economy is. Price cuts can cause a sustained increase in sales.

WELL then! I didn't know I had the ability to "recant"!
Then allow me to do some recantifying...
What I *meant* to say was that they've already sold more PS3s now than they ever have (and more Wiis and more 360s.)
Jesus... I just did it again... but now I know that I can RECANT!
And I'll elaborate this time to make it easier:
Sony isn't just battling for third place anymore. They've SETTLED in third place. They aren't going to wake up tomorrow and sell more consoles than the Wii or 360 no matter what they do.
But they also are no longer at the million consoles sold mark just trying to get their foot in the door.
They've already got that. They've sold way more consoles now than they were selling at launch. (I won't try to fix that statement anymore. I'll just assume everyone knows what I'm talking about... that's how we do it in Chicago.) They've got their market.
All a price drop will do is force Sony to come out with a crappier version of its system and betray it's original vision.
I've seen the "PS3 Slim" and it's GARBAGE.
Not entirely unlike the 360 arcade.
There are those who change in the face of tough times, and those who dig in their heels.
Sega should have changed.
Sony should dig in their heels.

Well yea... I didn't know something, found out new data, and then admitted my prior statement was wrong. Try it out sometime ;)
May I ask what info you know of about the PS3 slim? Is it crippled, and how so? The PS2 slim wasn't a stripped down version of the PS2 was it?
They "can't" strip out the hardrive, they stated from the begining that it was a standard item, so I'd think the developers would be furious over that. Do most PS3 games use the hardrive?
Maybe they'll take out backwa...

The only thing stripped from the ps2 slim as far as I know was the place where you hooked up the optional HDD, network adapter, and game genie thing. But the slim included the network adapter and IR sensor for the DVD remote.

Taking out the hard drive was a BIG mess. Add to that the fact that the Slim was a cheap piece of GARBAGE (alright... the regular ps2 is cheap... but it was a hell of a lot sturdier than the slim.)
It's like having a "Mustang Lite". Or a "Budget Porsche."

can we not talk about embarrassing cars please?
lets just stick to the rants about ps3/360 sales, and how a price cut will force them to use cheaper hardware.
but to give a good example, look at the original ps3, and look at the latest version. ok the hdd is larger, so what... went from 4 to 2 usb ports, no media ports, no hardware OR software backwards compatibility, still limited to 8 (or is it 7?) bluetooth connections simultaneously (which coupled with the reduction in usb ports means limited same console multiplayer, though it seems pretty obvious that they're trying to kill that off as well in most new games <.<). Oh, and I almost forgot, it still uses basic wireless g.
so, if they price cut, are they gonna take away the last 2 usb ports, downgrade the wireless g to wireless b, and downscale it from 1080p to 720p (not like any games use the 1080p anyways...)?
EDIT: ok, went looking, and found a list of all the known ps3 games with 1080p. it's surprisingly short, and full of 3rd rate games.
