This review is of the Scythe Musashi, which I bought from www.crazypc.com for my HTPC.

Here are some pics:

My HTPC (actually my 2nd one) is basically made up of parts left over from my previous gaming machine and my previous HTPC.

It consists of:

XCLIO Coolbox case
MSI P6N Platinum SLI Motherboard
Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz CPU
8GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 PC-1066 RAM
2.5TB of drives by WD and Seagate
LG BluRay reader
LiteOn DVD+-RW Dual Layer (lightscribe)
Vision Tek ATI Radeon HD4870
Hauppauge HVR-1800 (Remote)
Logitech G15
Kensington Expert Mouse Pro Trackball
24" Dell 2408FPW

The Video Card, a Vision Tek Radeon HD4870 512MB version, was just too darned LOUD for me to enjoy the system as an HTPC/Light gaming machine (I'm still playing Fallout 3 on it) so I decided to look around for ways to quiet it down some...

I found the Scythe Musashi at CrazyPC and it was pretty cheap (like $39.99) so I thought I'd take a chance to see if I could save what's left of my hearing while keeping the card relatively cool.

There are no instructions for installing it on the HD4870. The kit did not contain instructions, nor did the PDF file on the Scythe website. It's straight-forward enough though that you shouldn't have a problem.

1 - I removed the OEM heatsink (it came off very easily.)

2 - I cleaned all the goop off the GPU and RAM (See TIPS section)

3 - I installed the heatsinks from the kit (See TIPS section)

4 - I applied some Arctic Silver 5 to the GPU and installed the heatsink portion.

It was here that I ran into an issue:

The heatsink felt "loose" after installation, even after I tightened the bolts down all the way. I decided that I would have to use the copper spacer that came with the kit. Problem was, the spacer was as large as the whole GPU. I cut it down to size with a pair of Reds (metal cutters) and made sure the spacer was flat.

I then removed the heatsink from the GPU and cleaned up the AS5, and put new AS5 on either side of the spacer, then slipped it in between the GPU and the heatsink and reinstalled it and tightened it down. It felt much more secure, though still a just a "little" loose.

I was worried that the "looseness" would affect the temps or even cause damage to the card, but it didn't. In fact, I was quite surprised at how well it performed!

Testing:

Ambient Room Temps were 71°F and Temps were measured using ATI Catalyst Control Center and GPU-Z to see if the temps matched up. (they did)

Idle Temps (OEM Heatsink/Fan. Fan speed manually set by modifying profile, Stock Clock speed)
Fan speed 39% -- 33°C-35°C
Fan speed 65% -- 31°C-33°C
Fan speed 89% -- 29°C-31°C

100% Load Temp (OEM Heatsink/Fan)
Fan speed 65% -- 46°C-48°C
Fan speed 89% -- 43°C-45°C

In the above 89% fan speed tests, noise level was 47.8dB at 1 meter

Idle Temps Stock Speed (Scythe Musashi)
Fan speed 100% -- 28-9°C (it goes 28, 29, 28, 29, 28, 29, etc)

100% Load Temp with the card over clocked to 790core/1100memory (Scythe Musashi)
Fan speed at MAX (100%) -- 42°C-44°C

In the above 100% fan speed tests, noise level was 28.4dB at 1 meter

Results:

Overclocked as far as CCC will let me, I run 1°C cooler and noise was reduced by 19.4dB

At stock speed, at idle, I'm .5°C - 1°C cooler and darned near 20dB quieter.

There's really no decision to be made here. The choice is a no-brainer. Get the Musashi!

3 Tips (applying the heat sinks)

1 Very thoroughly clean all the Ram Modules and other little chips that the OEM Heatsink touches, or the little heat sinks from the kit will NOT adhere properly. I actually very LIGHTLY sanded the RAM modules with 600grit to rough them up a bit.

2 Know that you'll have to use one of the larger heat sinks for the two little voltage regulators as the kit does not ship with one designed strictly for them. There are more than enough extras though to make one work!

3 Using a pretty fair amount of pressure, hold each heatsink from the kit in place for about 1 minute, then move on to the next. Repeat until done.

3 Notes Users should know:

1 Because the Scythe Musashi blows the heat into the case, rather than out the back of the case like the OEM, your case temps will rise a little bit. If you have good airflow in your case, this is not a problem. I saw a 1°C rise in my case.

2 Installing the cooler on the 4870 is N-O-T covered in the manual that comes with the kit, nor is it on the Scythe website. I downloaded the PDF manual and looked, and it isn't in the PDF either.

3 Installing on the HD4870 required the use of the copper spacer that shipped with the kit. If you do not use it, the heatsink will feel "loose" on the card, even if you tighten the screws all the way. I used metal cutters (Reds, as they're commonly called) to cut the spacer to size.

It would seem I need to update my signature since half that information has changed, lol

got one of them on a 9800 gtx+ and its almost the same.

My load temps are what it was on idle with the stock cooler.

I got one, it also dropped the temps of my HD 4890 down really low. I was able to OC it to 990/1100. It's hooked into my front panel fan controller and is pretty damn quiet.

I main reason I was getting this is that it will enable crossfirex if you have 2 cards with 2 of these babies (won't interfere with crossfire cable). That gives the potential for a pretty screaming system that is ultra-quiet.

So my Sapphire HD4890 arrived today. I ordered one to replace one of the Vision Tek HD4870s I have because the 4870s I have are 512Mb cards. I wanted the extra clock speed and 2x the RAM as well as a native HDMI and Display Port connectors on the card.

The damn thing is DOA.

System will not even POST with it installed. As soon as I replaced it with either of my old HD4870s, the system boots right up as if nothing ever happened.

I'm kinda stumped, to be honest. I know the motherboard I have (MSI P6N SLI Platinum) puts out enough juice to the card through the PCI-Express x16 slot, and I know I have more than enough PSU for it (Corsair TX850) so this thing should be fine. No Go.

I guess I'll be contacting the egg tomorrow for an RMA# :(

Great review, thanks for the details! I need to get two of these for friend that has a pair of overheating 4850s; for the moment they have been stabilised by aiming two 120mm fans at them but this solution is strictly temporary. Good to know it has great performance and doesn't interfere with crossfire! :)

Does anybody know if this thing is a good fit for an 8800GTS 320MB?

I installed this on a second HD4870 I got from SneakySnowman. It cools absolutely great. I have it on a Club3D Euro-spec 800 core/950 mem (Mhz) GPU. It runs 12 degrees C cooler than my slower clocked (750/900) Diamond 4870 with it's fan @38%.

THERE IS ONE BIG PROBLEM THOUGH

The Musashi a bit wider than two slots. This causes you not to be able to Crossfire two cards and you can't fit a single slot card above or below it. I have an overwhelming sense of failure right now...

When i read that bolded part, I thought to myself there are 3 points of contention...

1 - Can't Crossfire the cards
2 - Can't put a card above them
3 - Can't put a card below them

Actually, you can do all 3 if you designed your system as a "system" instead of buying parts to put together.

Look at the space between the vid cards...that's more than enough room for cooling. You'll also note my Hauppauge HVR-1800 TV Tuner card mounted under the lower video card.

Of course, I don't have a card above them blocking the top card because I am passively cooling it with the case fans...If I wanted to, I have enough room to add a card above the top one. (barely)

Not trying to pick on you or anyone...just saying you have to look at the system as a whole when designing it instead of just throwing some parts together and hoping they fit.

With this system, I can get away with passively cooling one of the cards even while in crossfire, and the temp differences are only a couple degrees C even when overclocking them.

most decent aftermarket coolers make the cards wider than 2 slots, unless you go for a water block.

You can Crossfire two cards like dribblesnort demonstrated (sexy pics btw). You might not be able to do triple xfire though.
