Well it can always be heat overclocked or not overclocked, did you install the heatsink? Because sometimes the good heatsink always fail too like a installation procedure may go wrong etc.

Download: Motherboard Monitor and Prime 95.

Motherboard Monitor is a program to monitor your computer eg: Overclockers use it alot of monitor their temperatures their 5v rails etc.
Install Motherboard Monitor, open the settings go into temperatures and set all in the second drop menu make sure you have configed all the sensors not leaving one.

Then download Prime 95.

Prime95 is what we call a stress program, it puts 100% stress on the computer in other words it is your computer under load.

Now for the testing, start Prime95 and let it do its thing and in Motherboard Monitor the temperature of the highest temperature (Most likely to be 35-50) will start rising dramatically. Since your not overclocked and not using a Intel retail fan you shouldn't be over 40 degrees. Is your video card overclocked? Software Conflicts?

that would be my first question too, what kind of temps are you running? As stated above, motherboard monitor (http://mbm.livewiredev.com/download5.htm) will help you with that.

Once we know that isn't the problem, we can proceed to software or other hardware solutions.

ok i've done the test. The highest temp was 57° celcius and my system never crashed. personally i think it's the geforce. but the cooler on it is also new and i even have a ramcooler on it ... :(
could perhaps something be wrong with the vcore ?

ps.: my gf2gts is modified to a quattro 2 pro, but it ran stable for 7 months or something like that ...

:(

For stock speed and for a non intel cooler you shouldn't even be above 40 degrees full load.

Reinstall the heatsink.

Assuming you used some kind of thermal compound. Use very little the more you use the less effective it becomes.

Jeez, you're on the verge of frying your CPU and you're trying to blame the vid card? May I suggest three things? Cooling, cooling, and cooling. Either no thermal paste/heat pad was used or the heatsink was improperly installed. That's what I'd look at first.

That is very hot, shouldn't be that hot...

It sounds to me like your HS is not on properly, but before I go in that direction, do you have any case fans? What is your case temp?
Reason I ask is because if you HS is on correctly but you have no case cooling, it may be just recirculating the hot air inside the case, which could lead to high temps too.

Could it be that he got an OEM cpu that is OC'ed? Other than that I would have to go with the idea that your hsf is not installed properly, or with no thermal compound. You should also install a fan at the bottom of the case to pull in fresh cool air.

If quake runs, but other games lock up, maybe you
need to reinstall DirectX.

Doesnt quake use OpenGL or something ? I might
be wrong about that....

Before you do ANYTHING else find out why your temps are so high. Mine are 42 & 44 celsius and its at 100% load.
