View Full Version : Adding Fans to a 36" Monitor?

I have a 36" (32" viewable) Gateway Destinations monitor that I belive may need some cooling. It is not getting "hot" persay, but it does stay on almost 24/7.
Do you think if I mount a 120mm on top of the vents/grill in back that it should be blowing down (in) or up (out)?
And... where would I get it's power from? hmmm...

Let it blow up, the heat rises anyway.
You could get an adaptor, or you could get some plugs connect them to a molex connector, put one plug in.....have a look here (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?threadid=60855) (didn't want to type it again.....lazy me:p )

It's not a monitor, it's a TV. LOL

My IBM P70 gets quite hot itself, but remember, monitors are designed to run at a specific temperature range.
Cooling it may inhibit the gun, it will also be unneccesary noise and power usage.
Plus a fan on top of a monitor just looks gaudy :)

Not if you take it appart, cut a hole in the top, put in inside, put a fan grill on it, and run it at 7v.

You don't need to mod it, just put a fan on top, or buy a few monitor coolers!
P.S. How do you fit that on your desk?????!!!!!!

Hehe, That's huge...
The real question is, do monitors really need to be cooled. How complex does the circuitry inside the thing really get. With a processor you have thousands of microscopic pathways. I'm sure nothing inside a monitor is nearly that complex.
I'm not going to complain if you do it though... nothing about the plexiglass window, or neon lighting makes my computer any faster... but boy does it look cool. If you put a monitor cooler on and it makes it look cool, than go for it!

Nope, it is a monitor. Only connection on it is for the SVGA plug in the back.
The "mod" is for functionality, not looks, or modding for modding sake. I leave it on so much that I thought it might be a good idea to try to help it stay cool.
I have decided to just turn it off when I am not in front of it. SETI can do it's thing without me watching the progress bar! LOL

Ill trade you my huge 17" for your small, little Destination monitor.

Sounds like a deal KLowD. I only paid $450.00 for it, so not a bad deal. I know the owners of a "pay-to-play" gaming center. When the shut down to move, they asked if I wanted to buy the one I liked the best. so I did.
Looking at a 17" now a days to help work on friends systems is tough... I pray this thing never blows out... they are $1600.00 to $1800.00 dollars new..... Gods help me it ever goes out.....

Yeah, my Monitor acts as an unwanted space heater too. If you can find a 12v 150-300ma AC transformer you can solder a molex onto it.
The Amperage would depend on how many fans you are attaching to the transformer. Two generic 80mm fans consume 140ma each (140 x 2 = 280ma). Over-amping them three times what they're rated will fry them.
I generally use this method to test/figure out how tolerable the noise level of a fan is before I add to my case. Occasionally I use it to test Neons.

But what of the comments earlier in the post where it was mentioned that a monitor should be at a cirtain temp to work properly?:eh?:

man you must have to run that thing at a high resolution.
do you play games on it?
I was thinking of hooking a TV up to my monitor but people said that it doesnt look good at high resolution.
Im wondering if the TV's are getting good enough so you can handle high res now

Sorry for the delay in answering you folks, but this damned DirecWay satellite has not allowed me to connect to the net since 5:30... 3 hours ago... DAMN I hate this thing. I am connected through the modem even as I type this.... burning even more of my 20 hours a month of dialup allowence... GRRRRRRR
Anyway, WarLord2

You bet I play games on it! I used to play quite a few online games, ie: Mechwarrior head to head, EverQuest, etc... but that is out now that I am stuck with this satellite for a while. I have it sitting all the way on the other side of my full size desk (see pic in above post) so I do not go blind or get whiplash anymore!!

TV's are made with somewhere around 800,000 pixels, while computer monitors are made with 1.2 million to 2.4 million pixels, depending of course on the model. Higher cost does not always mean a better monitor.
I never have used my systems above 800x600 resolution, so this one works great for me. It is limited to 800x600 max res. there is no .inf file that can push it past that without severely damaging the monitor.
I put a DVD player in my system a month or two ago, and since then I have unplugged my "racist-hate-discontent-trash talking-bowing to the morons of the world" television set.
Below I have included a snap shot from the Final Fantasy DVD. I hope you can see it as clear as I can... I LOVE how they made her eyes!..... Brown hair/Brown eyes..... perfect woman....

Arkamedies,
Isnt the highest resolution you can run at 800x600?
I passed on buying one from a defunct Net company for $250
Either way im sure owning the 36" must be alot of fun

Using my 8500's TV out I can play on a widescreen 28" TV, looks great but not very sharp at high resolutions (800/600)
So i'm thinking of buying a 22" Flatscreen Monitor, $1500 just need a job!
If you wish to cool them then buy monitor cooler from somewhere (Maplins are good) took my 17" from hot to ambient.
Silent as well, not like i'd notice it as my box is over 60DB, hck I'm thinking of buying 10 x 80CFM Delta's!

SilverSinkSam, You are correct. 800x600 is the best it can do, but I really have never used any of my monitors at higher than that. I was not sure I was going to buy it when I found out that was the max, but after a bit of thought it worked out great.
I have gotten so used to using 800x600 that I "think" I enjoy it better than higher resolutions. I may have just convinced myself of it to make me appreciate the monitor more, but all-in-all it is a nice picture and is great for graphics and the gaming I do now and then.
I have decided not to worry about cooling it though. I just turn it off now when I am not in front of it.
I really do appreciate all the helpfull hits though folks. :D
Have fun and happy computing to you all!

aie, 800x600 is soo painful, not enough space on the desktop! loL! I run at 1152x864 on every sys i have that handles that high (all but the packard).
And games have gotta be high-res. I run CS at the highest OpenGL it can, and i still get a steady 100fps, while running winamp and seti!!! :D
you said the only input connection for it was a svga plug on the back?
its not a monitor or a tv, its both :p its a tv made for computers (with the loads of pixles as a monitor but size of a tv)
your resoultion is limited to the tv out capibilites of your videocard, so if you get a radeon 8500 or 7500 you should be able to run it at 1024x768

i have the 27" model. and i think that it is a good product for the average joe... but for ppl like us YOU DONT WANT THAT MONITOR!!!
The dpi blows, res blows, refreshrate blows.... and its heavier than ****!
And yea, it is a tv/monitor. It was cool back in the day but now that doesn't even interest me anymore!
