View Full Version : Why can't I access the S.M.A.R.T rating on my hard drives?

Before I upgraded I was able to check how my hard drives were doing using the S.M.A.R.T function. Now when I load up something like Speedfan or WD Data lifeguard I can't get a reading.
I have an XFX 780i mobo with a q9550, 4GB DDR2 ram at 667MHz and a GTX 260 for the GPU.
I have a 500GB and an older 160GB that always had the SMART function available but now it's not =(
Any ideas?

Is the SMART option enabled in the BIOS?

Which OS are you running, including the version of nForce drivers? The latest version of the SATAIDE Driver is v10.3.0.46, which if you're running an earlier version may conflict w/ SMART monitoring software. I think there may also be an issue w/ the 780i chipset and Vista whereas the same software, regardless of drivers used or version of the program, has problems reading the SMART data. You might also want to check out CrystalDiskInfo for SMART info...

Just restarted my computer... Went into the bios and I can't find anything about SMART...
Which section would it be under? I can't find it under Integrated peripherals or stuff about boot drives =(

OK woah
I just ran that Crystalmark HDD program (thanks for the link) and it's saying it's reading at 62.92MB/s
Does that sound low? Or is that about right?
This (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-245-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=940) is my hard drive
It says that it should be 3 GB/s so this is quite a fair way off, or am I misreading this?

nope sounds about right. under list of sata devices hit enter on the drive and there might be an option for smart there.

There isn't =(
Nothing there annoyingly. And if the times are right then why does it boot so fast but when I go to turn off my computer it takes about 5-10 mins :s
That's where my question was leading =D

If turing off the PC is slow it could mean its creating dump files, restore recovery info. I know in Vista if I do alot of install/uninstall on the OS it takes a while to shut down. Its annoying-

It's not the turning off that's the problem, I don't mind that. It's the fact that after it's been up for a while and after I've played a few games it takes 1 min+ to open up explorer and opening a song (in any player) takes over 3 mins :(
Not to sure why this is. I've used CCleaner, Defragged using 3 different programs, checked the bios settings and re-installed vista. Not sure where to go from here...

It's not a link, it's an underscore for clarification. In my previous post I asked you what version of the chipset drivers you were running, but instead of posting the driver information you instead posted the model of chipset.
