i dont think it will be any faster, if so just the time it takes to load the img: almost nothing faster.
while you see the startup screen the os is initializing a lot of stuff, you know, it will still initialize them without the startup screen.
but there is a way to remove it, i know you can do it using TweakUI.

go to control panel, folder options, check "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "hide system files and folders" click yes, then apply (on the two screens that will follow.) find the folder called "MSDOS.SYS". right click the folder after it is found, and select properties. uncheck the "read-only" box, then apply. right click the folder again, and select the "open with-" box and open in "notepad". move down to the column that has the command "BootGui=1" move to the space just after the number 1 and hit enter. Then type "Logo=0" and click the "x"in the upper right corner. when it asks if you want to save changes, click yes, then change the properties of the "MSDOS.SYS" folder back to "Read Only". now you can go back to the control panel and hide system files again. next time you boot, there will be no boot screen. i have winme, but this should be the same for win98.

Thanks You can always use TweakUI to disable the startup screen. Just uncheck the splash screen option:beer:
