View Full Version : Dual XP Vs. Dual MP

From my understanding, the newly released dual Athlon based boards such as Epox M762A, Asus A7m266-D and Abit, they can handle dual Athlon XP's as well. Now my question is what is the benefit of paying much higher prices for dual MP's than for dual XP's? I know that MP's are designed fo multiprocessing, but does anyone have any information or any benchmarks to help me decide on what to get, and if it's worth paying the extra dough for two MP's rather than two XP's?

Also, does anyone know if MP's OC better than XP's?
:)
MP's are factory unlocked.... too bad no dual motherboard will let u change the multiplier on both cpus

I never knew MP's were factory unlocked!!! opefully there will be a bios upgrade that lets you adjust multipliers on both CPU's,, but that raises another question,, Don't they have to operate at the same speeds? if they do, then that would jsut be pointless, no? Correct me if I'm wrong.

HEH...........well there's always something called a golden socket ................it's works just like the old golden finger slot a OC tools..............it goes inbetween the chip and the socket ..............it will let ya change multipliers and voltages reported to MoBo

WHERE DO I GET A GOLDEN SOCKET!?!?!
I want one!!!! :) Does it let you up the voltages too? I hope so!!
I have an epox 8kha+ that I want to take to the limit without risking damagin it by doing the v-mod

Actually, I jsut did some research, the golden sockets don't actually unlock the multipliers, they jsut let you change them if they are already unlocked and is designed for boards that don't offer multiplier settings through the bios. (I may be wrong, but that's what I read)
Go with XPs and save your money.
Golden Sockets only allow for a multiplier up to 12 so you won't be doing much with it...especially with the newer XPs. They don't allow voltage adjustments either.
MPs are factory unlocked but I've seen horrible overclocking results out of them ever since they came out.
Don't plan on buying an MPX for overclocking alone, they aren't that great for it. You just have to enjoy it for what it is...a workhorse.

o? is that true?

these 1.2's have been doin very well.
btw: on the cpu database its lists mps as Tbird Mp's.
they should be listed as such because the are Paliminos
Golden Sockets can go up to 12.5 not 12 Jon. As far as the overclocking ability's of MP's it depends. The newer style MP's i have seen only 1 result and it was pretty bad. Some people ( like me ) have been dualy amd for 4 months now and have the early mp 1.2ghz chips when they were the fastest out so golden sockets were somewhat pratical to achieve maximum speed. Those chips overclocked very well. I get my 1.2's to 1.4ghz with default voltages and decent cooling. You can set your default voltage to 1.85 no matter the board via the L11 bridges on your chips which i did. At 1.85 volts my mp 1.2ghz chips run at the next multiplier up on my sockets which gave me 1.47ghz. The heat produced by the extra voltage however required lowder and more powerful fans to remain stable which i did not want to do so i stuck with 1.4ghz.

Okay, I don't know if anyone realized it, but I was talking about Palomino MP's. Do they come factory unlocked? I'm thinking of getting a dual MP-1800 system when the Asus Or Epox boards come out. But the REAL question is,, Wil a dual XP-1800 perform just as well? ,,,,,since the asus and epox boards can use them in dual processing modes,, and XP's are WAY cheaper than MP's.

yes they are factory unlocked..
and for all intensive purposes both chips are identical.

So you're telling me that the only difference betweeen the XP'x and MP's are the price?

Yeah, that's the first link that popped up in my Yahoo.com search.
It's interesting that apparently there is no difference at all between the MP and XP palaminos, yet the Tyan can't use dual XP's and the MP's are much more expensive and come unlocked from factory. I'm getting confused here :P Does anyone disagree? This is all based on what I have read in reviews and fom this forum. Please correct me if I am wrong.

mp's are test for smp xp's are not sometimes someone will get bum xp if that would happen you could always get another for the price difference and sell the other one or use it in a single cpu config

I have an interesting question: What would Dual CPU's help you with? I've heard that i really doesn't help in gaming, and I don't know anything else 'bout Dual Processing besides that.

some games they do and some they don't.

newer boards use the mpx chipsets for dualing which are only compatible with MP chips, the older mp chipset used by Tyan accepted both MP's and XP's for dualing

Strange, I heard that Tyan S2460 didn't support dual XP's but the new boards (Asus, Epox, Abit) do support dual XP's. Man, this is so confusing. I hear different things from everyone :(

I don't know where you heard that from but it is incorrect. check forums at 2cpu.com
You can run XP's, MP's and Morgan core Durons on the Asus. You can't run Thunderbird and older Duron processors on the Asus though.

tyan 2460 can use all amd cpu's with socket a it just isn't recommended
