View Full Version : Nas with Usb
I have been browsing for a week and half now, i'm trying to find a nas 1.) that you can actually use as usb storage if there is no network 2.) supports dual drives 3.) not too expensive
Normally, I've seen a few with usb but the USB connectors can't be used for pc connectivity. They're for attaching printers or USB storage devices. Any help is much appreciated.

Are you looking for a NAS with BOTH ethernet AND usb connectivity, or just usb?

freenas,
Wouldn't work... I have a new ht setup where I can play mkv files thru usb storage. If I have a nas that supports usb, I could connect it to my network so I can load files on it and basically my player will simply pull those files and play them... going wireless is kinda hard, hard to stream 15gb-20gb movies...

I'm still confused why you need both network and usb. I understand your network is (primarily?) wireless, so you need the USB to stream movies to HTPC. So you want to plug it into your network near your computer, then unplug it, and walk it over to the HTPC? Cant you just plug it (USB) into your main computer, or maybe share it through that computer?
Sorry if you really do need both interfaces; I'm just making sure you're not making things overly complicated. ;)

Hehe sorry if it sounds overly complicated, I simply want the nas connected to the player (LG BD390) via usb and at the same time connected to my gigabit router via rj45.
So when I copy from pc to nas, its a lot faster since im using all gigabit connections.

Most NAS that you are looking for are pretty slow. 5-10MB/s at the most.
WD ShareSpace. I got one and i THINK it can do it. I'm pretty sure it can.

your going to leave it anyways while copying :)

I like the western digital mybook 2 as this device has a small community around it which is extending its functionality you can in effect turn it into a small portable Linux server.
taking this action kills your warranty however it allows you to have features which are only available in more expensive solutions.

The advantage of the NSLU2 is that it's not a little community hacking it but a BIG one. It's probably the oldest too. anything from file, mail webserver, phone, VPN, etc, all doable. There are several distros out there specificially for it, including standard Debian.
