I'm about to mount my water blocks and need your opionion on which thermal paste to use. I have AS5 and Ceramique.

Apogee GTZ for i-7 core 920

DD for GTX295

I thought I read somewhere that the ceramique works better for the gpu.

Thoughts?

Been using AS Ceramique for ages. Best stuff for my needs :D

been using both as5 and the cheramic and both works well for me
guess i would recomend the cheramic for the gpu since that one most likely haven't got any lid on it

AS5 for your CPU and Ceramiqe on the GPU should be good.

same here AS5 for the CPU

The best stuff I have used is either OCZ freeze or MX-2

i used AS5 on both north/south bridge, cpu, gpu, ram chips on gpu, inducers around cpu socket with super glue to hold the heatsinks.

i've switched to MX-2 for cpu, gpu and north/south bridge cores, but ram still gets AS5 as a glue.

when it comes down to it, there is a net difference of about 3-4C in the brand of thermal paste.

My recomendation to newbie's is always get the paste your most confortable applying.
Because a correct application of the worst tim is > wrong application of the best tim.

I don't really think the compound matters as much in your case as much as the aplication.

I like a nice smoth coating usually created with a plastic card and if the moisture consistency looks uneven even though the coating is it may take a good hot run to cure.

Beyond asking for suggestions, how is a "newbie" supposed to know what TIM he thinks is easiest to apply? It's a much better idea to buy a top-rated, enthusiast paste and LEARN the best way to apply it. After all, they all come with instructions and many will jump to offer advice if that isn't enough.

Thanks for all your great inputs. I'm going with as5 on cpu and the ceramique on gpu.

Good luck, al. ;)

Unless i'm mistaken, AS5 is known to be somewhat conductive. That's not a problem for big chips, like the CPU, as long as you're careful not to put too much on them. I've never used AS5 on the memory and other chips on the GPU. There's too many little metal points on a GPU to worry about. Typically, all the "white" TIM's are totally nonconductive. MX-2 is the bomb and works for EVERYTHING. The temp difference between most of the better TIM's is less than 2C and in most cases less than 1C.

You should use the new Diamond Unobtanium paste and spread it with the really darn expensive Ozmium credit card. You'll get subambient temps and Chicks will love you.

Otherwise, what you got is almost as good.

AS is fine. Some pro benchers use it so it can't be bad stuff. There are ohh five or so good pastes out there. The diff is small unless you must just have the best temps and then you'll remount it 10 times conducting load tests to check each mount etc. And each mount can be 1C or even 3C different.

So not a big deal. There has been some good reviews on paste in the last year or so.

LOL Perseus, I thought you would take it as a funny. You didn't Google it did you?

Nah, its fine. But MX-2 works just as well, doesn't take time to cure, is non-conductive/capacitive AND supposedly doesn't deteriorate over the long haul.

:D I save teh google for really weird stuff. You just seemed uncharacteristically out of sorts. Lack of emotes, I guess.

I'm just quietly watching the fannage push/pull 'chat', it's all out of sorts, hehe. Otherwise a normal 110 F yesterday, and warmer today. No mood to emote, it wears me out.

Yup, one of those "exchanges" that's not quite for polite company. 110 huh? I whine when it gets over 75. I love fall and winter! :santa:

:O

u leaking my secret on OCF????

With this super secret TIM i dont need to apply power to my TEC blocks to get negitive temps!

(attempt at shallow sarcasm) :P
