As long as the modem is an rj45 type and not usb then it should work. :D

Yea it`s a RJ45. Just want to make sure cause after all they have hubs, routers, switches, gateways and all and it gets really confusing.

I also got a question, I didn't want to open another thread so I hope I chose the "right" thread... anyways I have 2 computers thru a router one is the epox 8kha+, and a KG7-R mobo. The kg7-r has a 100mb/s ethernet card, and the 8kha+ has a 10mb/s card, now everytime I download from my 8kha+ I notice how the ram performance on my KG7RAID is hogged, at transfer speeds of 4,000k/s!!! I'am pretty sure that there has to be a way of fixing this up thru the bios so I can use less of my ethernet PCI resources. The other thing I can try is by capping the speeds of the downloads everytime I connect from 8kha+ to the KG7-R via FTP. But then again....

Ok I didn't get that one. Instead I got a D-Link switch. I called the local shop and ask them bout a router and he ask what I was hooked up to and I said cable. He told me since I'm using Charter to get a switch instead cause Charter only allows up to three computers to be hooked up. This is cool with me since the switch was cheaper.

wellz the router would technically be better if u plan to have heavy bandwidth usage on each computer connected to network and all online. As the router would distribute the bandwidth equally rather than more of a pipeline effect with a switch... :burn:

The only the the computer are used for is E-mail, surfing and game playing. I play Ghost Recon on line and my Fiancee playing pool on Yahoo games. I also have 1.5 DL and 128UL.

if you use a router, you can have as many comps you want

you can assign them thier own static ip

Nope no server. It will be just me and her hooked to it. She just wants to be able to get on without kicking me off mine.

only problem that u might have is, if u only have one ip addy for ur cable modem u will have a problem getting each computer connected online with a switch. So as trey mentioned, with a router, it would automatically assign ips for each comp. :burn:

This does not sound good cause I already ordered the switch.

you can always buy a 1 port router and connect the switch to it

but it is cheaper to buy the router with the 4 port 10\100 switch in it

i don't think they would have a problem exchanging it, especially if your spending more money, which you will on the router

I think I'll call my ISP today and talk to them cause I just heard that I can have 3 different I.P. addresses. Then if not then I'll get the router dangit. :(

youll probably pay an extra 20 - 30 bucks per month for teh extra Ip's

thats teh way it is down here

and don't mention anything about the router to tehm, they don't like it

XprincoX

well if u wanna extra ip addy ur gonna haveta pay extra.. and that switch would still be limited to the number of ips u have. Still would highly suggest getting the router instead, as u would save waaay more in the long run. :burn:
