rest of the applications such as SMTP filtering, Content filtering etc should never ever be on a gateway firewall bastion host anyway. It’s just stupidity to put them there. http://dickmorrell.wordpress.com/2007/09/15/infoworld-awards-ipcop-a-bossie-rejects-smoothwall-30/

Now I can see both sides of the argument but why WOULDN'T you want Content filtering done at the firewall? It takes minimal overhead to do, it doesnt involve a ton of time and it doesnt preclude anything made in the last (10?) years from doing both at once effectively.

Ehhhh, where exactly does that guy think is the best place to filter content if not at the firewall?

There are plenty of enterprise level router/network appliance devices that do all manner of filtering. Some of the nicer ones like Sonicwall for instance, even do virus scanning ffs. Maybe this guy is only used to working with $30 Linksys routers.

The article is also like 2 years old.

Conway, I know, I was looking for some IPCop info and saw that post, after reading it regardless of age it really annoyed me.
