I maybe on my way out the the junk yard tomarrow in search for a used frig for a homemade vaporchill
Ive done a little research on it but cant find really any info.
I do have a couple of questions.
like what does a condenser do? I understand that its those coils that are in back of the frig but what does one look like in a vaporchill setup? is it just a heatcore?
also is a evaporator the part that touches the cpu?
Im a total n00b that wants to learn:)
also if you dont want to answer all these questions I would be very gratefull if you give me some links for me to read
by the way, what is vaporchills homepage? I searched yahoo and couldnt find it anywhere:mad:
Thanks

here's vapochill's web page, with a shortcut to see the insides a bit. Also has brief explaination of how it works too.

thanks for the link, it helped ALOT
guess I was right on most the stuff:)
if I do make a phase change cooling rig can I supercool my cpu, gpu and graphic card? and for
and how small of Capillary tube should I use? like 1/4" or 1/8"? and would it matter how long of tube it is?
Condenser/Evaporator is the heat exchanger. Capillary tube risky business it could work. I'd find a good HVAC man and make him my new best friend. Mine is and we have talked about this it can be done but before you dump those hard earned bucks keep reading and talk to a few guys that have done this. BTW what is the facination with freon? I by no means I don't want to discourage you just my thoughts.

I want to do this so I dont have to worry about heat when its 105 deg out here:D
also I think it would be a great accomplishment if I pull this off, Ive thought of going pelt for some time now and I just dont have the resources here in town to make one. I also want this system to look good and portable, for me to be able for me to take it to lans.
Im asking about the Capillary tube because this looks like what vapochill does.
I probley wont use freon but that R134A refrigerant stuff
I dont think you can even buy freon anymore.
You'll find a basic outline of what the various components of a refrigerator do in this article that I wrote earlier this month here;
http://www.overclockers.com/tips777/
The system is very complex in design (you need a chemical engineering degree to really design a good system). Suffice to say that when the system is designed the compressor, refrigerant, size of condenser and radiator and the diameter and length of the capillary tube are carefully balanced. I am working on this at the moment and I think the main thing would be to retain the existing design but find a way to redesign the evaporator so that it will sit on the cpu. I am working on such a design at the moment. The key issue with the evaporator is to make sure that all the refrigerant is boiled off and becomes a saturated vapour before entering the return to the compressor. If liquid refrigerant enters the compressor it will die.
I suggest getting a book on refrigeration principles to fully understand the modus operandi.

yes I have read your article many times and learned MUCH from it, I see that you are using a freezer for a condenser, why?
cant you just use a radiator with a fan?

I am using the evaporator to absorb the heat from the coolant.
The cooling route is; proc - w/b - coolant - evaporator - R12 refrigerant - condenser - and finally to air.
You know from your air cooling that the more transfers you have the greater the inefficiencies. e.g. one of the reasons people use ASII is to improve the performance of the transfer of heat from the proc to the HSF. Its the same in this case. The next best thing to on die refrigeration is to get a good medium to transfer heat from the proc and out via the evaporator.
In very big air-con systems where it is difficult to pipe refrigerant over long distances they use water as the cooling medium and pipe that through the system in the same way.

ohh
I think I get it now
your cooling the water with the evaporator instead of the cpu (maybe I should learn how to read your sig:beer: )
I was going with more of a route that vapochill took
Have you seen my site yet? I've got all the info on how I made my phase change setup. It might help a little. (link is in my profile)

And you should definately check out ptcg's website. I've been on it before and it's very informataive (lots of pictures too). Actually I just went through about 10 minutes with Google trying to find it again, only to fine he was a member. (Hey ptcg, GREAT JOB! Astounding setup)

ptcg your the guy that inspired me to make my own vapochill:)
your site is awesome and I will be going back to it alot to look at how you made that monster:D
Diggrr I donno if I want to go to that extreme but nice link.
I didnt know you can buy a system like that made for you, I wonder how much he paid:eh?:
Yeah, I wasn't trying to suggest the immersion part, but the ready made compressor system looked way cool. It also inspired an idea for me...I wonder how Danger Dens Maze2 would work as an evaporator, or even Dtek's sidewinder block with it's 1/2" passages (soldered tightly of course)
Now that's an interesting idea.

Ive seen people do maze1 but never have seen a maze2 in a phase change setup
I cant find a junkyard anywhere that sells old frigs. We have a bunch of junkyards but they all sell car parts.
All I really need is the compressor sense I can make the rest of the system, but where can I find one for a cheap price?
Im sure there are junk yard that have what Im looking for but how do you think I can find thim?
Ive looked in the yellow pages but there not listed atleast not as "junkyard"
I'd just look for the scrap guy. Ya know, someone who seems to have a bunch of old cars and everchanging piles around the yard.
There's one in almost every community I've seen.
You could also drive the 'burbs when there's an appliance pick-up day. Your bound to find stuff free then. Call the garbage company to find when it is.
As for the phone book, try refrigeration repair.
