you can't realign the laser with software. THats likely impossible. Have you tried the drive in a different computer?

Sounds more like you just need to clean your lens really good. When a laser head starts to go bad it usually cuts in and out completely, then dies for good.

Almost sounds like the spindle motor is going out, I've never seen it personally but it could happen I suppose!

Thanks for the replys, the lens is vv clean, the motor can spin up to 30X but thats on cd roms only, some how the speed seems to be governed by how well I can get the laser aligned but I cant get it spot on. Im not looking for software to realign the laser, that has to be done manualy what im after is some thing that can monitor how well the laser is actually picking up data from the rom in real time so I can then manualy adjust aignment till I get back on track. Ive been told that some manufacturers use this type of S\ware, but thanks for your input anyway guys :)

ive never heard of that at all

the only thing i can think of is there was a program like wintop but it monitored every read and write to the hdd mabey you could use that and copy something from cd to the hdd

If you just want to see performance between different adjustments, then use Sisoft Sandra and run the drive benchmark. You gotta have a cd in it with large and small files like windows cd's.

Just a thought.

thanks for the ideas guys I used Sisoft to help get the drive back to where it is now and it aint easy. I wouldnt recomend doing it that way to anyone else though mainly because its still kinda trial and error and talk about BSOD, get the tracking slightly off and bang not even Ctrl alt del will get you out of it the system just locks up like a rock. anyway thanks for the input.
