Okay , heres the deal, me and a friend are giving another friends GateWay p2 350 a spring cleaning as teh case has not been opened since it left the factory, which was like 2yrs ago, so it has collected quite a bit of dust...Anyway the slot 1 p2 has the biggest heatsink I have ever seen on a cpu, Im surprised the cpu can sit up in the slot, anyway I was wondering on how the heatsink is attached, We thought it was held by these "star" type screws but they actualy seem to be studs as my "star" screwdriver couldnt turn them, it actualy tried to strip the first one we tried. Im thing gateway has almost practicaly attached the heatsink to the cpu heatplate. Im new to intel slot 1's, So Im wondering of the heatsink is attached in any other way, and how to go about getting it off....

Laterz..and thanks in advance. Also we will try CPUFSB to see if we can overclock the proc..but thats after we replace the heatsink.

What sucks is that if you take the retail fan off it'll most likely damage the clips and you won't be able to put it back on without a new Slot cooler.

The best way to do this is to take a case screw put it in the back in the hole and take the screw driver and push with one might of force and pop it.

I have an old Gateway P2 G6 350 that is a slot one, after reading your post I Pulled the cpu and as I'm looking at it, it appears to have rivets holding the heatsink on. If your brave you could take an 1/8'' drill bit and carefully drill the heads out and possibly get it off. I am in the proccess of getting this one back up and running and I am going to try to mount a 60 mm fan on this heatsink. I would be interested in knowing how to o/c this just for the fun of it as it doesn't appear to have any jumpers or dip switches on the mobo for changing the fsb.

Well what we are going to first is mount some case fans on in the case to get cool air to the cpu from outside the case and directly onto the rather large heatsink, and then mount a fan in teh front to blow air out..Also the fan on the powersupply blows on the heatsink as well but this air is of course slightly warm. We are going to try overclocking with CPUFSB...heres the link: CPUFSBv2.1.5 (http://www.podien.onlinehome.de/CPUFSB.ZIP)

If you're just cleaning out the dust, why bother removing the heatsink. Get a can of air, "blow off" is the brand I currently have, and use it to blow the dust out of the fins.

Those air cans don't seem to work very good at all for me. I tried it once in my fins and the remaining dust was sticking so now I get a bottle of isopropyl and just clean the fins with it and a lint-free cloth. Does the job and keeps dust off there for awhile.
