Hey guys. Iv never really been one to complain about hard drive speed but I am looking into doing some upgrades to go win7 64 bit this winter and I want to make load times quicker. Which way would be best? a SSD drive for my OS? Or a RAID 0 combination for a OS drive? Id like to do something fairly cheap so I was thinking RAID 0 might be more suited for this job and if it is what would be a good combination of drives? I plan to use my onboard SATA hardware raid controller on my motherboard TA790GX A2+. Im new to RAID too so any pointers on anything would greatly help me out!

From what I've heard, the new SSD are wicked fast. If you have the money to grab one, I don't think you will be disappointed. But if your tight on money I guess you could save a few bucks and get x2 WDC blacks .. as I hear they compare to the raptor drives. Those in RAID 0 should be awesome as well.

As for setting them up in RAID, I'm in the same boat as you =p

Would a single SSD work almost as good or just as good as RAID0 between two normal state drives? Maybe one of those new Intel SSDs for 300 bucks?

I think the SSD are a good bit faster than any drives in R0 .. but yeah, if you can afford those new intel drives, I've heard nothing but good about them.

the newest g2 intel drives are thing thing to get for sure. their reads and writes might not be as high as say two wd 640's in raid 0. but the random access time is SO much lower and thats what has the biggest effect on performance. its why hds have slowly increased in rpms... 4200, 5400, 7200, 10k 15k... is to try and reduce access time... and ssd's essentially have nil.
If prices's on ssds continue to fall i MAY have to buy one or two. they are moving in the right direction, but id like to pay more around 1$ / gb. considering you can get normal hds at up to 15GB per buck.
