So I stumbled across this fake AP program which supposedly makes your network slightly more secure by broadcasting thousands of fake access points.

Anyone ever seen something like this? Kind of curious to see how it works.

Yep, I have seen it.

Basically, the system creates dozen(s) of fake APs using the default SSID (Linksys, Airport, ect.) and the vendor MACs (00:00:0C, ect.) Your REAL AP then hides in the giant list hoping that no one actually tries to test them all.

When someone like a wardriver drives by, they will see tons of APs. If I remember correctly, the fake APs can still be monitored for traffic. You could eventually tell which one actually had traffic on it and then focus on that one.

I would not consider doing this if you ever plan on having other people use your wi-fi. Personally, I think removing SSID broadcast and using MAC filtering is much safer than this silly AP spamming.

Of course, there are other......uses for Fake APs. ;)

I personally prefer the hide AP and use encryption route. There are so many APs about in cities and towns now that anyone wardriving is going to just move on unless they particularly want a challenge.

Never really saw the point in MAC filtering - I always saw it as easier to get round than encryption so I wouldn't ever call it a substitute.

I hide my SSID, use WPA2 and mac filtering. I am going for layers, hoping that they will just move on to my one of my neighbors with out any security. Though the mac filtering can be a pain, especially when I forget that I have it enabled and then cant figure out why my wireless isn't working.

Yeah I also hide my SSID and use WPA2 encryption. It just seemed interesting.
