i have a hardtime believing that id would hand over quake so easily, so chances are id will make the next one.
and it will have to be a new engine to compete with U2 D3 and all the new fun toys.

Ummm, no. I was at Quakecon, this year, they revealed that Raven was entrusted with Quake 4 while id was putting together Doom 3 and polishing the engine. I don't think Doom 3 will be out until September or so, at the earliest, and Quake 4 will probably come like a year later. Don't get hyped up, you've got awhile in waiting ;)

Found something...;)
"Following id's announcement that Raven Software are developing Quake 4, lead programmer Rick Johnson has turned to Quake fans for feedback by holding a three-hour open forum with attendees at this weekend's QuakeCon event in Texas.
While Raven may have the technical side of things nailed down by
making use of id's brand new Doom III engine (although an id
spokesperson at the show was eager to point out that Raven's sequel
would be appearing after their own game hits the shelves), the
designers seem eager to get as much feedback from first-person shooter fans as possible before they make any final decisions about what to include in the game.
The open forum dealt with pretty much all the elements of the
single-player game - only mentioning the multiplayer side of things to
confirm that there would be one, but until more details of id's Doom
engine could be released nothing could really be said about it.
The most notable aspect of Quake 4 is the return to a story-based
environment. id's experiment with deathmatch-only gameplay seems to
have finally run its course (thankfully). Instead we're most likely to
see a continuation of Quake 2's plot (escaping from the Stroggos
planet only to crash land somewhere else in the galaxy), with a strong
emphasis on characterisation. The legacy of Max Payne seems to be
strong in everyone's minds right now.
Half-Life was the other theme visited by the assembled crowd, with
requests for continuously streaming level designs as opposed to the
self-contained nature of many first-person shooter levels. Also the
setting seemed to be a bone of contention with most people united in
the need to avoid FPS staples such as swamps, sewers and
warehouse-style caverns. The less exploding crates on display the
better, basically.
Exploding enemies were a different matter though. Serious Sam was the benchmark for end of level bosses ad requests were made for bad guys with plenty of character. The more bloodthirsty members of the crowd also made requests to use severed body parts as weapons, although this may have been a fumbled attempt to call for dynamic use of scenery. Level design was also a strong issue, with an almost universal call for an end to the key, lever and door puzzles of old.
Unfortunately, the requests for complex settings, deeply involved
storylines and intricate puzzles were then put at odds when the crowd
were asked about the nature of the gameplay. Action, action and action were the responses. Forget stealth missions, the fans wanted big guns and lots to shoot. Understandable considering this was QuakeCon, but the more widespread successes of recent titles such as Operation Flashpoint, Counter-Strike, Deus Ex and the like would indicate that the wider audience think differently.
While holding forums like these are encouraging from a gamer's
perspective, we can't help but worry that the majority of games
players tend to react to whatever is most popular at the time. Hence
requests for Half-Life style level design, Max Payne-quality plotting
and Serious Sam bosses. With the development time of Quake 4 likely to be anything upwards of two years, trends and themes may well change. Only a year ago no one would have looked twice at first-person shooters that required stealth or team-based tactics. Now everyone's into Counter-Strike and Operation Flashpoint. Our advice to Raven is make the game you want to make and worry about what the fans want later. As long as you make a good game, people will buy it no matter the content.
