ok i baught a 1.4athlontbird and asusa7a266 mobo off the net.under the software monitoring system that came with the mobo i click on information and it says Max Speed 1200mhz under it it says Current Speed 1400mhz......does that mean they gave me a 1.2chip instead of a 1.4?

can't really tell you, but i have been talking with AMD lately and they are talking about locking there processors like intel does because people are remarking them for higher speeds like they used to for the early pentiums

Download this:

http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/sandra/index.htm

Or go into Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information

To make sure the software you currently have isn't flukey.

nonononononono!!!!

Well, at least with the XP they make it a PITA to unlock it so it is not worth it for resellers. This fellow IS talking about a T-bord after all...

Check the CPU. It will ahve something like this if it is a 1200:

A1200AMS3C

If it is a 1400:

A1400AMS3C

Hope this helps.

On the tiny square (the die) in the middle of the chip in small white writing.

sry man but thats the only way u will know if its the right chip..

if u are talking about asus probe then the max cpu speed is just a reference to the max the board is able to use but they can change that with a simple bios update so just check what the multiplier is on your cpu if it is 10.5 if it is then reset your bios and see if the multiplier is still 10.5 because i think reseting the bios would set the multiplier to its default setting and the only way to set that would be to hard wire it with the bridges on the cpu itself and i dont think many if any would go thru that much trouble

Take a screenshot of what CPUID shows you and post it for us.

Just push it down with your finger, and then unhook it with a pair of pliers/screwdriver. It's almost worth the trouble!

On the little square in the middle of the chip! Once you get it off, you will see it!

The only way to be sure is to take of that HSF then look at the die. Software & BIOS readings can be wrong.
