When I built my PC, formatted my driver and everything... i then installed windows 2000, when it was installing, the installation paused and said "cannot find or install drivers.cab, press C to continue or ESC to exit installation... well, i skipped the file and went on with the installation... everything was fine and dandy, untill i tried to install my onboard sound card, when i tried to install the driver, it says something about a "file needed to install multimedia controller cannot be found in win2k. Please insert the win2k cd and press ok" So i did that, but it still wont install... my question is, is this because I skipped the "drivers.cab" part of my windows2000 installation??? Thanks in advance....

yep, that will do it. the drivers.cab file is a compressed file of all the drivers win2k may need at a later time but doesn't now. so id reinstall, as long as ur not usin a ghetto version of windoze u d/l'ed of of morpheus, u should be ok, post any other questions

is there any other method of retaining the cab files? other than reinstalling the os all over again?

I would imagine that the only way to do it would be to reinstall windows again.
In the 6 or so months that I have been using Win2k it has not once asked me for the CD.
Unlike W98 which asks for it every other day.
you could try Here (http://www.winplanet.com) They may be able to shed some more light on it for you.

Is the cab file actually on the CD?

If its a legal version then ask for your money back from wherever you got it from. If it isn't a legal copy, serves you right.
