Whats your method for removing a heatsink from your comp.?
I usually take off the fan - makes things easier - then undo the clip and gently unhook the other side off of the socket.
Why? Is there a problem with your heatsink?

with a hammer and a chisel ;)
honestly i use a small screwdriver to get under the fastener and it usually works after a couple minutes of tinkering and trying not to apply too much pressure and break something.

screwdriver
Yea, I removed the fan but than how do I remove the clips from the heatsink. It might have been glued on by the guy who built my comp.

do you know what brand and model HSF? or can you take a pic of it and post it?
Ussually there is a tab to insert a screwdriver or nut driver.
gently push down until it clears the lugs then gently pull out from lug and slowly release.
wait a min.
all stop.
what kind of heatsink are you trying to remove?
VGA?
Chipset?
CPU?
makes a big diference

i remove mine by unscrewing 4 screws :)
Needlenose pliers.
Much more slip-proof than a screwdriver.

Do a search for this stuff TRINITROTOLUENE ! Might work!
Its a CPU heatsink, the pic has the fan on it though. Anyone got any suggestions, btw thanks for all the help.
Sry, forgot to attach the pic.

Warning: You have to be Very careful when removing/attaching a HS to the CPU. If you are not careful, you could crush the CPU core (die) or even chip it! I'll tell you want to do (if I can make it clear enough), but can't be held responcable if something goes wrong.
That is an Orb cooler of some make right (circular)? If you look at the top of the pic there is a silver peice of metal going over the tan of the socket. That would be the clip. From what it looks like from your pic, all you have to do to remove it would be press down on the silver peice of metal with your thumb. When you do this, you will notice that a loop that is attached to the peice is now in a position so you can push the peice of metal that your thumb is on in torward the HS itself. When you do this; it should clear the loop of metal over the hook (lug) on the socket. At this point, you would want to make sure that the hook that is attached to the lug on the other side is loose so you can take it off the sockets' lug. Now that the clips are off of the socket lugs, you should be able to just pull the HS off of the CPU. Hope this helped. :)
Thnx so much, thats what I have been waiting for, thnx a lot. :D :) :p ;)

One other thing.
WELCOME TO THE FROMS! :) :D
Enjoy the insanity. :D
Ok, finally (thnx for all the help, everyone who replied) I took out my mobo and detatched the hs. It was clipped and glued, believe it or not, like I thought.
Result: Unlocked AMD Athlon 900 and one bloody finger.
Just 1 question, Now that it is unlocked how do I change the multiplier from 9x to 7.5x

well that depends on what kinda mobo u have... some mobo u can adjust the multipler from the bios, other u have to flip change some jumpers on the mobo itself, and even other a combo of the 2. :D
You probably havent herd of it but it is a ACORP 7KTA sounds like a knock off of Asus. It would be great if you knew anything about this mobo, it would really help. You probably havent heard of it so if you dont mind can you research a bit for me and find out, thnx. Anyways in my bios it doesnt list anything about multipes.
I can't believe that my first time taking apart a computer went successful. I feel so confident now, would it cost more to build a comp or buy one? I already know how to format and install windows.
BTW does anyone know where I can get a water cooler?
Thnx so much for everyones help. It was so funny when my dad came, he was what the h3ll are you doing. But the good thing is I got it back together with no problem and only cut up, sore hands, lol.

it seems that your not as familiar with compters as you should be for watercooling, you need to know about mounting, thermal conductivties, crushing/chipping the core etc. then what to do if something goes rong.
i sugest you wait a little wile before you do that and get familiar to this stuff....

Yes i would also agree.. You reeeally need to get to know ur system before u start playing around with it. Otherwise, ur really running the risk of screwing something up. And when it comes to such fragile equipment, as in a computer u really don't wanna free style it. One screw up can cost u literally $100's. I suggest doing a lil research on ur mobo, and maybe reading some of the guides on the main pages. :burn:
You guys are right, I don't know much about watercoolers. But I read one of the begginer guides saying how watercooling is 30x better than air cooling. Thats just got me interested, but its too confusing for me so I'll just stick with air. Thnx for the advice
ive read a extreme amount on water cooling and pelters and what not and desided i would go with a massive 80 mm air cooling untill im sure i can handle watercooling and overclocking with it even though ive been building PC for YEARS this is my first OC run.. i sold my old motherboard to get a iwill kk266 plus r mostly so i can OC and ordered a pal8045 so i can OC and my cpu with defogger.. so just a warning get rdy for some spending and some **** ups... THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I CAN TELL U IS THIS!!! MAKE SURE THE HS ALWAYS MAKE CONTACT WITH THE CORE (blue box sticking up from the chip) if i were u i would also buy a BLUE NON CONDUCTIVE SHIM.. sence u say ur hand was sore im guessing u had a bitch of a time removing the HS and i would not want u to crack the core from to much pressure or something... start out small dont go from 900 to 1.2 on first try go little by little and check ur stabily and also the temp..
NOW back to the subject.. my ECS k7vza could not overclock.... so i bought a referbished iwill kk266plus r for 75 bucks (which is a KILLER deal sence all its missing is a cable to connect the 6 cannel surrond sound which i can just order from iwill) now if u want near watercooling but with aircooling and no petliers then i think the pal8045 by alpha is ur best bet i got mine for 43 bucks total with a 48cfm y-tech 80 mm fan..
one last thing YES it is cheaper BUT if u dont know where to buy then it wont be cheaper.. i made my system in augest for about 500 bucks NOW it was worth a 1000 and my system still was better BUT if i had bought everything at lets say best buy it would have cost me about 800 to 900.. i bought everything in my PC but my HD from ONLINE with the help of pricewatch.com
HOPE THIS HELPS MAN i tryed to give u everything i wanted to know when i first started..
Thnx, I can't believe how many people actually took there time to help, it means a lot. I havent been on for a few days cuz windows load my backup settings and messed up my whole comp. I formatted it and installed everything back on, its working a lot better to.
Just this one question, I switched the jumpers on my mobo for a higher speed (from 100mhz to 107mhz) and all this weird stuff kept coming up, like on the startup it said your system is ready to be shutdown. I could also switch it in the bios, But why cant I find anything on how to raise the voltage a bit and change the multiplier? What should I be looking for to do this?

Are you trying to OC the sytem (what it looks like when raising your settings). The first thing that I would say is that if you were planing on using the orb I say in the pic, Don't! I'll probably get flamed but Orb coolers usually don't make the best CPU coolers. They are great for your mobo chipset and the GPU of your graphics card but not for the CPU. This might be a reason you are having problems; because the CPU is getting too hot. If you're not sure wether or not you can OC the mobo, Don't until you can determine if its OK. If it turns out that you can't,don't sweat it. There are products and programs that can allow you to change the FSB. The one that will work if you want hardware is the "Golden Socket". The rest of the peps on the board should be able to help you futher. :)
Im thinking on getting a new mobo and cpu instead of getting no where with this 1. Its a cheap Chinese mobo anyways. Anyone got any suggestions for a better (266mhz) mobo and AMD CPU?

a soyo dragon+! they are awesome! i have a dragon non plus and it is awesome! when you hear about problems with them, they are all corrected! its just user fault.... and it has exelent stability
the plus had kt266a chipset and the nonplus has kt266 without the a wich i dont really eaven know if there is a diffrence... and the nonplus doesnt come with the scr wich i DON'T know ANYONE who would or could use this!
I was thinking about a Abit (266mhz) with RAID since I got a AMD.
