Yo all,
I deeply regret buying the IBM 60GXP. 2 of them makes the most irritating noise you can think of; High level and high frequenzy.
I should have bought the Seagate´s U6 instead, I can´t tell any difference in performance anyway. :(
regards,
Henry.

Some of those 7200 RPM drives are like that.
I used to like 7200 for the performance over 5400, but the last two drives I bought were 5400, and with ATA 100, I really don't notice the performance difference. And, of course, they are super quiet.

I suggest you go to the ibm site and get tyhe software that allows you to reduce drive noise. No kidding ! I forget the name of the program but you can adjust the noise via software. i will look for the name and get back to you

Thanx Bill, I appreciate it. I rather not let my buddy get my harddrives for $50 less than retail if I don´t have to.
regards,
Henry.

Does it reduce the performance though?
I mean I'd bet the noise comes from the rotations obviously and you'd have to lower that to get a lower noise and probably less performance.
According to IBM, performance does suffer when reducing drive noise via their utility.

Hello Again,
Here is the link for that program It is called disk manager 2000
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm#diskmgr2k
Now for the bad news ! I recently installed the exact drive you have in a machine and it died 10 days later. I like IBM drives and they did RMA it with a brand new drive. However I would go easy on the data on that disk if the noise does not clear up. It has been my experience that IBM drives are as quiet as any out there.
As a last resort I would RMA it., The IBM site has a hassle free RMA policy and it is easy to use.
Good Luck, Billy

If you want quiet, you simply can't do better than a Quantum Fireball Plus AS. The only noise I hear from my box is the 2 case fans.
I got one when I went to buy a 40 gig Maxtor, the Quantum was in the box (I already know everything about Maxtor and Quantum, no need for posts telling me why I got what in whose box. =P). Best drive I've yet come accross.
Yeah, I'm in the same boat you are HRII.
The only thing I hear in my case are those IBM drives, and I'm more than willing to sacrifice a few dozen nanoseconds to get some quiet. It's not like that raid is getting the stellar performance everyone said it would. (Not here, geeks in IT at work).:(
Thanks Mucho for the link too Bill, I'd tried to find it before.

Are you serious? A _7200_ rpm drive? Would this one be just as quiet as the Seagate U6?

Henry.

Thanx a lot Billy.
Unfortunatley the program doesn´t work with my RAID setup. :(
What is RMA?

Henry.

Yup, 7200 RPM. And RMA stands for Return Merchandise Authorization; means the manufacturer will send you a replacment before you send them the broken part--helps alot with HDDs, you can copy stuff to the new one before you return the broken one to the manufacturer.

I don't know about that. I just installed a WD ata 100 7200 hdd in a machine and it is louder than my grandfather clock ! I do have to say it is fast.
What company will send you a HD before you ship yours back without a deposit or something of that nature ? I have never experienced that.

Like... all of them. You can do a free RMA, where you send them your drive first, then they'll send you a new one when they get it, or you can use a credit card as collateral (It won't be charged at all, not even shipping), and they'll send you a drive before you send yours to them.
