My 60GXP´s drive me crazy. However, I persuaded a friend of mine to buy them. :)

Now I´m going to buy new ones. 2 of them, 60 Gb+ each. What to buy? Keyword is: SILENCE

Henry.

I have four drives currently.

2 20Gb Maxtor 5400rpm
1 20Gb Western Digital 5400rpm
1 13GB Maxtor 7200rpm

They are all more or less silent. The oldest one, the 13 gig maxtor 7200, does not have any whine, but is a little older and ata 66. I can hear it access just a little.

The others are so quiet I cannot hear them at all... I get flamed a lot for liking Maxtor, but I have good luck with them, and NOT with Western Digital.

My rec: Maxtor, or just about any modern 5400 rpm drive.

The new Maxtor DiamondMax+ D740X series are meant to be super quite, 7200rpm, and are UDMA133
The new IBM series 120gxp are supposed to perform better and are a lot quiter than the 75gxp and 60gxp

I have one Seagate U6, and in terms of noise it is absolutely great! You can hardly hear it running. In a RAID setup it will propably perform quite well too.

How big is that drive? If its fairly big get another drive like that and you can hook it up to Raid 0.

40 gigs - my aim was to have at least 100 Gb. But why not - maybe I can live 80 Gb for a while....

i have barracuda iv seagate drives, as far as i can tell they dont make any noise, without sticking my head in my case and putting my ear to them. mind u one of em died recently. i am mourning its death and waiting till monday so i can post it back and hopefully get a replacement. i should get my glaciator and stuff on monday woohoo! can finally go over 1600mhz then.

keep your eyes on your data. there were so many complaints about the ibm deskstars lately, a lot of them were returned after a couple of months. perhaps you might want to backup your data.

I have two Maxtor 40 Gig 7,200 rpmers, and they're SILENT! I can barely hear them when I'm defragging, even!

LOL it´s intresting to see that at least some forum members share some of the same concerns as I do. ;)

But I think we have somewhat different perception of "quiet" around here. Is there any place where I can find hard data about this subject?

Henry.

I don't know of a place where you can listen to the drive. There are some thing you can do to reduce the noise from the drive. If you put something that will absorb vibrations such as a gasket between the metal cage and the drive it should reduce the noise because the drive won't be rattling against the case. You could also use a delta fan(thats the surefire way, you can't hear anything :D ). The Barracuda IV is supposed to be quieter than the other major drives out there even though its a tad slower.

Well u asked about some ppls perception of how quiet somethin is.I'll tell you how :There is no single sound comin out of those hdds man,no single sound.I saw a nice poll somewhere on the net few months ago, can't remember exactly where that was on which site but its title was somethin like this:
How many of you have a dead IBM 60GXP...or somethin similar ..
As far as i remember there were very little problematic hdds but many ppl replied on that poll.
cheers

My 80gig Maxtor is really quiet. Can't hear it seeking or anything. My old 17.2gig Maxtor and 20gig IBM drives are kinda noisy though. But they are pretty old... I bought the 17.2 Maxtor back in Feb. of 99 and it still works like a champ. Even with heavy use. And I believe I got the 20gig IBM in March 2000 and its been used even moreso than the Maxtor 17.2 I love both of them.

I agree with Trap, my GXP is silent, well at least quieter than my fans. Last HD I had was an olf fireball st 6.4gb, you could here it in the next room with the door closed!!!!!!!

Well, with a Titan HSF and an Antec 300W PS and two case fans(Papst), you can certainly hear the difference.

I just bought an 80G western Dig w/ 8mb cache. It is very quiet and the 8mb cache sure speeds things up too.

You may want to try this:
http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/00017.html
The only issue would be with heat but I am sure there is a way around it. Give it a shot and let us know it the product is any good!

The quietest drive I've ever used is my Seagate Barracuda V with liquid bearings; not a peep...ever! I'm very pleased by it's acoustic performance. It's not the fastest drive available but it's competitive.

MAxtors are quite...
my 80GB and 160BG 7200RPM drives are very quite.
My WD 20's @ 7200RMP are the loud ones...

So basicly, you want a quite HDD, make sure it has a Fluid Dynamic motor. Aka Maxtor or Seagate.
Go for a Ball berring HDD and you are going to have noise

Wow! Your a nice friend, trying to get him to buy your deathstars. He doen't need enemies when he has friends like you. Seriously though, the Maxtors are pretty nice. I normally can't even hear my 120GB under the fan noise in my case. The only time you do hear it is when its acctually accessing data, aka the head is moving. But its still pretty quiet then, and about all modern drives are about the same in that respect. Seagates are also quiet, but I'd have to say to get a maxtor because they get higher benchies than the seagates.

If you want quiet go with Seagate or Samsung (Spinpoint).
