Overclocking Dual Athlons

Hello all.. The name is Joe, I've been a lurker for some time but now I need to get involved... I'm in the Information Security industry and I'm always doing CPU intensive processes... I'm also a turbo freak when it comes to cars so it only seems fit that I become an overclocker ;>

So I sit here on this fine Saturday and I'm running TCPDUMP int he background, copying 2GB of data to another server (yes I have a 19" rack in my living room), running a brute force password attack on another server, and my darn machine is running slow! while most people would say "Well duh! what do you expect" I say screw that I need more power...

Ok enough of the introduction. I'm looking to build a screaming workstation. Since I've done alot with liquid cooling in my GMC Typhoon (gotta keep that turbo cold) I'm definatly going with a liquid cooled setup... I also like the idea of SMP since I'm getting invovled with distributed process clustering. So what I want to do is build a Dual Athlon board running a pair of 1.6s (Ideally overclocked to 2.0Ghz). My questions are:

Is this possible ?

What do we know about overclocking dual boards/processors?

Has anyone had such luck?

Is the ability to overclock the dualies right aroud the corner?

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS

Yes you can overclock duals see sig.The newer MPX boards have a front side bus adjustment that will allow you to oc it.Thay however end up with only 4 pci slots after the usb 2.0 add on card is used cause the usb is flaky off the main board.

My Tyan S2460 rev 3 board uses a program called wcpuid to overclock the FSB.I usually leave it at my sig speed but can run at 144 fsb but suffer USB device loss.

A few questions:

What is oc?

Why are you using the USB 2.0 add on card?

Why do you leave the fsb to only 144... what is the limit of the motherboard? Don't they sell Motherboards capable of 266 FSB?

These questions are sort of spawned from purchasing plans. Is there a better board you'd go with?

O/C= Overclock

I dont have a usb card on my tyan it is the newer MPX boards that have USB problems.The board I have is called MP.The MPX set ups need the card or you wont have any usable USB ports.

Front side bus is multiplied by a factor of 2.So a setting of 133 on the main board gets you a 266 FSB.

My Front side bus is 138x2=276

I would not at this time buy any other Dual AMD board except the Tyan REV3.It is the best tested platform so far.The other makers have bugs on the newer chipset so If I started to build today I would buy the TYAN S2460.

Now in 2 months I would reconsider this cause by then the MPX boards should be bug free.

Diehrd, just out of curiosity what speeds are you running at? What speeds do you think you could run at with additional cooling... I'm wondering if I should go with the 1800's or hold out for the 2000.... Any suggestions?

Joe I run at 144x11.5.

I dont have a cooling issue cause I never hit 40c as it is with my moded air cooling.

So the limits of overclocking are a system by system issue.My friend runs 24/7 at 144x11.5.I lose my usb connections at the 144 front side bus.

oh your board can only hit 144 huh? mine will do 233 ithink so thats like 466ddr! but that can probably never be done though.....
because of it speeding up everything and not suficient enough cooling.....

Amd when you set the front side bus it is always x 2

What are you set at know ? even if you hit 233x2 lets booth encode a video and play quake 3. I will even set my fsb to 200 lmao,cause that single system will freeze up if you tried this he he he !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i know all this....if you had the proper cooling and all the soyo dragon will go that high........ 233x2 im serious! go download the manual from the soyousa.com and youll see...i know nooone will ever be able to acheave that but if it was possible this board would go that high.......
