What do you do in this case? My old lady's hard drive is almost full, so she can't download any more shows from Itunes. The case doesn't have room for another drive, I'm sure. I guess an external storage drive would be ok, if it had NO connectors other than whatever it connects to the computer with.

Really, I'd rather just get her a new, much bigger 2.5" drive. There's like 6 different brands on Newegg, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380%201309740009&name=500GB shows the options. I was thinking 500GB seems to be the sweet spot right now.

Will I have to reinstall Windows and all her junk? Do modern notebooks just use a standard SATA connector, perhaps letting me plug the drives (old and new) into a regular computer to do an image and copy it over to the bigger drive?

Am I missing something here?

edit: If it matters, her notebook is plugged into the same router as my other 2 PCs, and there's plenty of room to add drives to those.

Find out if its Sata or not. If it is a sata drive you can clone it over no problem and continue on. This is the drive I'd pick http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136314

Just get acronis trueimage, image the drive, replace it with bigger drive, restore the image.
