The PS3 got a new overhaul and is alot more effecient from what they say here:

I never played with one myself after hearing how hot they get. I might try it if they use 34% less energy.

Some people are saying that they might be slightly faster too. IBM disabled one of the cored of their Cells, leaving them with 7. Now that the chips are smaller there is a smaller chance for defects and broken cores, so they might unlock that 8th core.

There are several things that are not mentioned in the articles that I have seen:

1/ Is the new Cell just a die shrink that uses less power or does it have other differences.

1a/ If it has differences will they affect folding and or multitasking.

2/ The power savings that they talk about, what is the baseline? Is it the original 60gb and 20gb or the current models based on the 40gb PS3.

3/ Why all of the big deal over PS2 compatibility?? To my knowledge the PS3 has not been able to do that since the introduction of the 40gb model.

PS2 fully compatible models are the original 20gb and 60gb. Partial compatibility is with the first series of 80gb PS3s. As far as I know the 40gb, 160gb and newer 80gb drives cannot play PS2 games at all.

Thats actually a plus for me. It would actually work with my audio setup correctly unlike most older devices.
