I have an XP 1700+ and I want to OC it ..and am considering my options ..does anyone know the "potential" of this chip //I mean is it worth spending money on an H2O cooler ..if the chip can only go to an 1800+ ...but if I could get stabilty at 1900-2000+ it would be worth it ..
thanks

Depends, more than anything, on what kind of motherboard you have. Also, check out the AMD CPU FAQ at the top of that topic...

I forgot to mention I have the Soltek SL- 75 DRV2 mobo ..
I was highly rated by TOM'S ...

Uh Oh, going by Tom's ratings...should have looked at more than one place. From what I have heard, Tom is not the brightest light on the xmas tree.

my xp 1700+ is running @ 1.66 or xp2200+ acording to sandra..
this is with air cooling and 44c under load. not too bad i think.
i only have an enlight 300w psu and this may be holding me back from getting a little higher. i can load windows and surf the web at 1.7 but crash in 3d apps... don' really know if you need water cooling i'd stick with a good air cooler for now and see how much you can squeeze it and what your high temps are.....

the chip itself can go to a 1900+ with fsb (some have gotten 2000+) with it unlocked who know maybe a 2200+ :D u never know forsure

lots of ppl got that board, but ive heard nothing good about it...
I have my XP1700 (on an EPOX KHA+) o/c'ed to 1607 (145 fsb), with no alteration of voltage; I'm getting a core temp of 38* w/ a load, 35* idle, and an ambient of 27* idle and loaded; the system is perfectly stable. I really know nothing about CPU architecture, voltages, etc., and I am wondering, is it really that easy? Am I really getting close to the same performance as an XP1900, just by bumping up the fsb? Am I unknowingly frying my CPU?

no. those are great temps. if u up the voltage and keep that fsb going up and/or unlock the chips mulyiplier, u could have urself an XP2200+1.77ghz or higher. jusk make sure as u go up u keep checking ur temps and knock the pci/agp dividers up a notch. if ur mem becomes unstable try upping the VDIMM voltage a little
good sounding chip right there!

i agree, sounds like your doing great for a first timer :)
Thanks for the confirmation! btw, what are pci/agp dividers?
My current case (an archaic Inwin Midtower) will not allow me to install my Alpha 8045 heatsink (the PSU is in the way), so I installed an 80mm Enermax adj fan in a blowhole I drilled directly over the CPU; I drilled out and installed another fan blowing in from the side, perpendicular to the CPU--they brought the core temp down about 15*C! I am debating whether or not to grind down the splines on my Alpha heatsink by a few mm's, or save my pennies and purchase a Coolermaster 201 (I saw this case at a shop and was deeply impressed!). I'm kind of thinking it would be blastphemous to put the heatsink to the grinder! With my temps where they are, I'm thinking I'll play it safe for now, and try overclocking more after I upgrade my case/heatsink.

I got my xp 1700+ up to 1630 mhz with only the FSB i dunno what xp chip that speed is considerd at? 1900+??? . The highest i got my ram was 148 mhz useing kingston pc2100 ram ECC....not that i think the ECC does anything for overclocking but i got it anyways....:-).. I am thinking of unlocking the multipliers but i cant afford the cunductive paint. Do any of you know if artic silver II will work as a bridge connector or not? Cuz i got some of that .....

I have an epox ep-8k7a+ mobo with same 1700+ chip, i was able to get it to 1650mhz and keep it stable. My fsb was @ 149. Ofcource because its locked i cant do much better with fsb. On my old 1.4 athlon i was able to acheive a bus speeds of 175 by dropping the multiplier and i was happy with my 3dmark scores
http://goku0080.tripod.com/mypc/id19.html
Start at the xp1600 (1.4) and move up 66 mhz for each consecutive xp.
i have a 1700+..its currently running at 1.65Ghz(150*11.5)..and its super stable....just crashes every once and a while like anyonther Windows machine...lol

ASII will NOT work as a "bridge connecter" if you look in to ASII you will see that it says "LOW CONDUCTIVITY"...you may want to try a defogger kit or something...IMO i see no reason to unlock the XP...just my opinion....

make sure u dont have an athlon 1.4 cause those come unlocked

One of the reasons that you want to unlock the multipliers is so you can utilize a "lower" multiplier and take advantage of a higher FSB. This is a big advantage particularly when using a motherboard with the KT266A chipset
For example;
10.5*133=1396 where as,
9.5*150=1425

Yep thats the only reason u would want to unlock it. Helps with 3dmark scores a lot:D
another good reason would be if one of your components in your comp just cant take the high fsb but u know your cpu can take more mhz then just up the multiplier and u can keep going up without frying one of your components like ram or hard drive or whatever

my system was only stable up to 148 fsb. i tried the jump to 150 but that was a no go. i unlocked and the multi is at 11.5x144.5 or 1.66. mostly stable up to 11.5x146.

No to get higher fsb u drop the multiplier not raise it, Drop it to 8.5 and u will get 165fsb:cool:

thats good advise to a point but not everyones system can do thos high fsbs regardless of what cpu is in or what multiplier it has

hey, do us a favor, and dont upload that pic everytime, make a sig instead, cuz SKIP doesnt like alot of pics seeing they lag the sever and take up space... i know im not a mod, but im sure then warm you, just a heads up,
thanks

you are correct...but im happy with my 1700+ running at 1650..its a decent OC, and those little bridges sure are small!!..I dont want to try it...lol

nope, my system isn't stable at 150+ tried it with the multi as low as 10. since the highest fsb i can get is 146 and be really stable 11.5x146 is much faster than 11x146, yes?
