This really stains an otherwise great experience I've had with them. If your contract is up and you want to upgrade, you think you'll get a nice deal on the next phone right? Wrong. In addition to the cost of the phone, you'll be forced to pay an $18 upgrade fee.

This is lame.

Do any other carriers do this? Back in the day when I had Verizon, upgrade time was a great time.

They are also going to start charging $1.50 a month if you want to get your bill mailed to you.

I didn't get an upgrade fee for my sister's phone upgrade...I haven't gotten my monthly bill yet though.

Didnt know that, but I recently switched to the eBill just because I got tired of shredding all those pages.

i kno when we went to upgrade we were going to get charged the 18 dollar fee and we were like... ok either you take that 18 dollars away, or we cancel the contract and go do a new 2yr contract online without the fee.

AT&T charges also. Nothing new.

That's odd - I upgraded once with TMobile and they didn't charge me. They just gave me a deal on a new phone (which ended up being horrible). Is this new?

It must be something new, because I just got my 4th upgrade in February, and have never gotten a charge for the upgrade. I really don't agree with the $1.50 charge for paper billing either. If I don't get the paper bill, I forget to pay it (had it happen a few times, wondering why the phones were suspended, apparently the wife forgot too). I have talked to some sales guys at the T-Mobile stores that have given me deals on the upgrade prices, plus the rebates, and waived fees, so if you talk to the right person, there is a way to get around most of the fees.

AT&T doesn't even mention it when you upgrade - at least they haven't for all 3 phones I purchased as upgrades. They just sneak it onto your next bill.

Now THAT is totally lame  They should have the decency to inform you about the fee and to inform you how much it is and if it will be tacked on to your bill if you refuse to pay it up front.

This is one of many reasons why I don't own a cell phone. Got a house phone and I pay $40 a month with all the bells n whistles (long distance included). I don't even use voicemail as that's another xtra charge I can do without. A digital answering machine takes care of that.

Dam cell phone companies and their BS

I know a few ppl who have good experience with the prepaid cell phone plans. Just use what you need and nothing else.

I have a cheap NET 10(part of Tracfone) cell phone. It does all i need. 10 cents a minute voice and 5 cents a text message.

We've got a bit of a special circumstance. My Mom's company pays $300/mth for her bill and what she uses it for is her choice. She downgraded her plan slightly and let my wife and I jump on as additional lines. We use maybe a couple hundred minutes a month each and the plan has over 3000. We get unlimited texting also. I think AT&T sucks but atm it's free for my wife and I so I'll just suck it up no matter what the problem. If I was paying, I'd go with Verizon. Better reception/call quality and better choice of phones imho.

They mentioned it to me on both phone purchased this year for me. In March for a Samsung Eternity and I went to BestBuy earlier this month and purchased the Nokia E71x through them and they even mentioned there would be an upgrade fee. (Need to add the data plan to my line so the pic messages dont add up lol)

Same with the last 3 phones through AT&T.

As far as Verizon, their reception has been absolutely terrible in the more country areas for me, in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Texas. Calls on Verizon network would be dropped, or no signal, whereas 90% of the places I went with AT&T I got signal. The 10% I'd say, neither networks had a signal. Might be sheer dumb luck that it has been this way for me, but AT&T has been the most reliable for where I have been and am currently.

I really think with phone companies it comes down to merely what you can get for your area as well as personal opinion on who you like better. My family has been with AT&T for over 10 years now, and my mother being an RN gives us the business member thing that allows for some discounts every now and then. The long time commitment to the company however has proven nice towards my latest phone purchase, $50 off the $99 w/2yr contract E71x.

I have a business/military account with TMobile and it didn't save me from it.
