Hi all,

I've seen some guides online about the disassemble of the general 4890 but it seems that my XFX revision has different mounting??? I'm trying to install a Scythe Musashi on it but I can't get the stock casing of as there seems to be something I'm missing. Has anyone ever disassembled one of these cards or have any tips on taking it apart? It seems that XFX used some type of sticky tape to mount the cooler to the board (not sure about that). They definitely use less screws than the normal setup.

Any tips on disassembly of this card are much appreciated.

Thanks,
lfs

I just took mine apart a few days ago. You need to pretty much unscrew all the screws on the back of the card. 4 holding the headsink bracket (the thing in the shape of an X), and all the screws on the outside. It's like 15 total or something like that. Once I took off all those, the whole heatsink mechanism came off. From there, the actual metal heatsink is secured to the plastic housing by I think 4 more screws, and the fan secured to the plastic housing by 3 screws.

I didn't notice any kind of sticky tape or anything of that nature. Once all the screws were unscrewed from the back, it just came right off.

thanks for the reply but i've tried exactly what you described... here are some pictures of my board

as you can see there aren't as many screws as are normally described

the tape is thermal tape, it helps transfer heat from the card to the heatsink.

Just remove all the screws and the heat-pads will come off as well. They're not sticky.

Really? I tried removing the screws and then detaching it but the case would just bow towards the middle like there was something still connecting it there... how much pressure do you have to apply because i don't feel like destroying my new card :P

Thanks, sorry if you feel like you're :bang head helping me

Have you removed the brace for the heatsink too? That will be holding the cover in place too...

yea i removed that along with the screws holding the enclosure and still no luck... does anyone have this revision of the card with the same screw setup because I've been seeing 4890 cards online that have more screws than the one i have

they should still all be visible, try using a hair-dryer in tandem with your pulling strategy (again be cautious) the thermal paste may be holding the HSF in place

no go.... it seems like its stuck to the case pretty damn well even after I remove the screws, I mean I'm using as much muscle as I can without damaging the card and it still wont budge

I'm having the same problem.

XFX 4890

There are 5 screws on outside of the board side.
There are 4 screws in the middle in a square shape
There's an additional screw holding in the port plate, and four hex nuts.

I've removed all of them and the damn thing won't budge. I'm trying to install a Twin Turbo, but can't get the stock heat sink off, problem exactly as the OP.

I've fixed this. Liveforsnow: It's attached to the ram with a sticky tape like yous showed. Play a game to heat up the card, turn off the computer, remove the screws, and pull while the card's still hot.
