NEVER buy ethernet cable locally.... always buy from monoprice (or someplace better if it exists).

cat5e handles gigabit just fine.
there is 0 reason to pay the premium for cat6.

i would have to say the best investment i made when it comes to network cables was a spool of cable, crimpers and cable ends. sure it takes some practice to make cables correctly when you first start, but once you get it down, you will never go back to buying cables :)
also, +1 for monoprice on the best prices on the internet for cables. i have found lower prices but shipping ended up costing more.

how is that so cheap? stuff at bestbuy is like 100$ or microcenter.

because places like best buy are overcharging by about 10 times what they should.

have a 50 ft run of cat5e and get the same speeds compared to a cat6 10ft cable both gigabit both to the same server computer....
and ya retail places are crazy expensive when it comes to cables. 6ft hdmi cable 60 bucks wtf type of thing.

I'd still say go Cat6. Better cable, better shielding, more futureproof. NTM - with Monoprice, the "Premium" you pay is like an extra $1 :p

The shipping was more than the cable! haha

no futureproofing whatsoever. the only reason to get cat6 is if you live in an area where there is a likely high chance of electromagnetic or radio interference.

Like, for instance, if your CAT6 cable is running parallel to A/C power lines or simular ;) . For the literally $1.51 difference in cost from a 50' CAT5e to a 50' Cat6, why not give yourslef that extra resistance to EMI/RFI, and end up with a "Sturdier" cable in the end?
I have a few longer Cat5e cables (been around for a while) that seem to auto-negotiate @ 100mbps. I swap to a Cat6 50' from Monoprice, and it auto-negotiates @ 1gbps. Go figure (worth an extra $1.51 to me for the peace of mind alone ;) ).
I'd say this is even MORE beneficial if you are running through walls, etc. It's stupidly-cheap "insurance"...
Lol, I know what you mean. Wireless absolutely SUCKS!
IMO the best way to buy cable is to buy it bulk and crimp the cables yourself. I bought 1000ft of cat5e for $70 2-3 years ago and haven't had to buy any more cables since. I've made all the money back buy selling cables to friends at almost cost, so I basically am sitting on 300ft of free cable.
