I need to a buy a capable laptop, not too big, but not too small. I'd like one that doesnt overheat.

I won't be playing games on it but I would still like it to be fast and capable. With at least 2 GB of ram and a dual core processor, capable of running Windows 7.
My price range is 600-900.

If someone can direct me towards a model or series to look into I'd be very grateful.

I would recommend something like this, 100%

You could use this link to see the search I was looking at

Dedicated Graphics, Price between 675-900

I bought my system through this, got the T500 in my sig for $1000 (minus the intel SSD)... very very good bang for your buck.

FYI, I have the switchable ATI graphics, and a 1650*1080 screen, games run fine. I play TF2 at highest settings with approx. 50FPS with the dedicated graphics, and I LOVE being able to switch between when I need more battery life.

Alienware m15x that's a nice bit of kit
You can read my ongoing review of it in this forum

WUXGA High definition screen 1920x1200
Intel Core2 Duo T9500 (6mb cache - 800mhz FSB)
8GB PC2-5300 SO-DIMM
Nvidia 8700-GT 512 MB
Intel High Definition Audio
Samsung 256GB 2.5" SSD
Blueray Disk Burner (Smart Bay)
Intel Pro Wireless 4965AGN (a/b/g/n)
6 Cell Li-on Battery
9 Cell Li-on Battery
160 GB 7200 rpm Hard Disk (Smart Bay)
Battery (Smart Bay)
2.5 mega pixel webcam
Alien FX keyboard

Its got incredible battery life, its the only laptop I consider truly portable, with the 9 cell battery and smart may battery I can exceed 5 hours battery life without having to go into energy an saving mode :D

Seems great and all but I'm not sure you even read the first post/title. The base price for that is $1,049.. his price range is $600-$900....

Whoops shows that everyone makes mistakes,
but I must admit I never even know how much it was in the US :-/

Ill rephrase my suggestion then :
The Dell XPS 1530 is a great laptop for reasonable price, top quality and a great bit of kit although I do not know what it costs in the US :D
