how long does your comp take to boot up?

Johan

Too long...probably 30-35 seconds or so. The SCSI BIOS installation really slows it down.

My overclocking rig (Celeron566@995) Win2K rig takes almost a minute and a half.

My roommate's Sony VAIO Win2K 1ghz Athlon takes like 10 sec.

The backup Compaq Celeron 667 Win98SE takes like 30 sec.

This is a good idea for a poll!

'Bout 40-45 sec. I got a ATA 100 Controller and Raid card so that slows it down. Used to be 20-30 seconds.

Win XP - 1 min
Win 98 - 45 sec

I have a wireless network installed so it slows it down a bit :)

adoes this poll include just into windows or for all your startup programs to load to

to windows: 15-20 secs.
w/ programs: 40 secs.

hopefully these times will be less with XP, i'm hoping

XP 1800+(1.533@1667) Win2K Pro, no boot from cd rom in bios, start to finish, and able to run a program immediately: 55 seconds.

Includes IIS, Seti@Home, MultiSetiMonitor,SetiQueue and ZoneAlarm.

Of course normally it never reboots:D I had to shut it down to time it.

From POST to Windows 98 ~9 seconds?! Wait how?

I start counting from the second the Elsa Gladiac 920 info pops up on the screen, I let all 640MB of RAM be counted, have Dual Boot set to 0 seconds and I still cannot get Win2k up under 1 minute. 1:10 to be exact.

In reply:

I (and many others) do tweak my os a lot- if I turn off a bunch of services that are not necessary for a minimal desktop os, and get rid of memory checking in bios, I can lose around 15/20 seconds on my boot time (estimated.)

But I don't think a time of around a minute is bad for Win2K that is providing WWW, FTP and network services, plus the programs I have running at startup: my login screen arrives at 30 seconds into the boot process- but the pc is nowhere near ready to be used yet!

How about measuring boot times in an average over, say.... a year? Since my Win2K/Linux and WinNT rigs do not normally get rebooted the boot up times don't particularly bother me! A fast stable OS is much more important.

From my last post,

Win XP: ~15 sec and win 98: ~9 sec is when i press the power button and timed it and stops the watch when i see my wallpaper in windows.

if counting the loading of programs as well, it would be:

Win XP: ~18 sec
Win 98: ~11 sec

ps. i timed it with my casio watch so i think it is pretty accurate. Also I timed it several times.
