Has anybody done this volt mod that is descibed here (http://www.xcl-clan.com/articles.php3?id=29) ?

I need some help with how excatly it is done. The article is not that helpful and I toasted my 8500. Luckily I am the manager at the parts store so RMA is a snap!! I have the new one now and I am ready to try again. Thanks for helping this ATI stoopid guy here.

What exactly did you not understand about the voltage mod? I did it as described with great results, just had to make sure the power was OFF when penciling, and test voltage immediately upon powering up. Oh, it also helps to use a hard pencil lead so as to not get too much graphite on (I used a clicker pencil 0.7HB). Also make sure you use the test points shown in yellow for your positive leads when testing, I used the case as ground. If you have your meter set properly (volt) you should have no problems.
See my post for more info on my mod here: http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60928

Still not answering my question. When it said stripe, what are you doing? I did it just like my old t-birdie and it fried. I need detailed instructions. Your referance to that thread just stated that you did it, not excatly how.

First I pulled my card, then I just ran my pencil from the solder on one end of the resistors indicated to the solder on the other end, along one side of the resistors only. It does not take much to carry enough current to raise the voltage, but it took me several swipes with the hard, fine-point pencil I used to get enough to stick to the side of the resistor. If you use a soft pencil with a blunt point, one good swipe may be too much. (on my card now you really have to look close to see the pencil marks.)
Then I installed the card and powered up. As the system was posting, I was already testing the voltage, If you are quick and careful, you can have the tests done before Windows loads. The first try I did not get enough, so I had to repeat (this time I just unplugged the tower and scribbled a bit more on without pulling the card).
On the T-bird you were trying to make full contact between the two points so the more graphite that stuck the better, here you want just a little bit , only enough to lower the resistance a bit. I personally would not try it without measuring the voltage immediately on powering up, although some have done so and gotten lucky. My other post shows my voltages before and after.
Hope this helps.:burn:

PS. Maybe someone should actually measure the resistance values before and after as a future reference, as that could be tested without powering the system up, thus preventing such mishaps???

Hey Trancebear, how did your mod go? I'm thinking about doing this, but I'm not sure I dare to do it...

Well I fried the 1st one, the second one may have to wait until I can see more info about this. I think I may have penciled too much. I think that the article was not that detailed with that fact. I am gonna do some more reading and I will try again. Doing the BIOS flash was very easy under XP, even though there is no DOS. I will keep you posted.

Well sorry to hear your first card died. Hope your second one is a charm.

Those are top secret fringe benefits of the blue stars. I have a feeling you are going in the right direction. It took me many months, but it was worth it every step of the way.

tranceBear, what does your card do at default voltage settings ...

mined does 310/315 and this is with tweak monster ramsinks and a crystal orb.

PS I better not try and attempt to volt mod my card as I bought it in NY and at the moment Im living in Ireland. However if I ever have spare cash maybe I might try it!!!! The cash would come in handy for my replacement card if I do burn out my 8500
