I bought a new cd-r drive for an old computer so my friend could burn cds. However, whenever I try to burn a cd with iTunes, it says the device is not recognized and does not have the drivers to burn properly. The burner I purchased is the Sony Optiarc AD-7200A, and the computer is a Dell Demension 2350 running Windows XP SP3.

When I try to import a cd into iTunes, all of the tracks sounds like a lot of clicking noises, and when I try to burn a cd the same thing happens. When i try to burn a data cd through Windows though, it seems to work fine. I tried to reinstall iTunes, and repair iTunes and nothing worked. Any ideas? There were no driver updates available either.

Open the Device Properties window for the optical from Device Manager, and check the Device status under the General tab.

What happens if you try to burn a disk w/ a program like ImgBurn?...

... and I assume you're running the latest iTunes v9.0 for XP?

I had not tried to burn with a different program other than a data cd with Windows. Since this is not my machine, I do not have access at the moment. Let's play hypotheticals if you don't mind and what would you say in either case if it worked and didn't work?

And yes it is the latest iTunes.
