View Full Version : Physx on ATI
I just wana let people know on the physx subject my ageia PPU work brilliantly in windows 7 with my 4870x2. Mirrors edge looks great and it does push my Vantage benchmarking up approx 2000k on my cpu too if you care about them things for bragging purposes. Worth doing if u have an ageia card or a series 8 nvidia card and of course the games to play.

only way to get physx on an ati setup is try and find an older seperate physx card

You can't do it on an ATI setup with an Nvidia card just for Physx?

yea you can its been posted here before but its a real pain in the ass to get it to work properly it really isnt worth it....

hmm i thought they were all regular PCI but i guess not, heres a PCI Express one but its only 1x, not really an improvment over standard PCI but a 1x card is more flexable and probally more future proof than a standard PCI

Neh no pain in the ass at all, i just installed the card and installed 08.04.25 physx drivers and I was away. dead easy. it is worth it if you have a card around doing nothing. Mine is also PCI, i did this deliberately as my PCIe's are covered by 4870x2 and I plan to have another 4870x2 in the furture. PCIe PPU's is easier to get hold of though.

woah i think we all confused each other here.
i completly miss read the first post. for some reason i saw GPU the first time but it says PPU which is the card.
so yea you basicly unpack the drivers, found the physX install and installed it that way right?

PCI Express one but its only 1x, not really an improvment over standard PCI
PCI = 133MB/s
PCI-X (64-bit, long slot) = 266MB/s
PCI-E 1.0 = 250MB/s per lane
PCI-E 2.0 = 500MB/s per lane
PCI-E is most definitely an improvement over PCI
Regardless of the PCI speeds it still works great, I get no slow downs and when physx is enabled so it is capable of keeping up especially at 1920x1200 on a 49870x2. I wouldn't say it speeds things up which is obvious as the physx wouldn't be there otherwise but hell, i know when its turned on. Mirrors edge is one of the best physx games going and i honestly wouldn't go back, i just wish physx was on every game but its becoming very popular with developers now so we should see more. Cryostasis works well also.
Here is an old video but shows off some of what it has to offer. Seen as its old it keeps up as it has no other work to do

As for the drivers I got the physx drivers only directly from nvidia as a single file, installed them and i was away, i didn't even need a reboot.
Like I say it can be done with a series 8> nvidia card but i went for the PPU so to draw less power from PSU.
If your on windows XP this setup will not work. Only Vista and Win7 is supported.

so pretty much all you do is get a 8 series card plug it in and install the physx drivers... but how about the nvidia display drivers that are installed when you install the card? wouldnt that conflict with ati?

ok i went over this, hes using an older stand alone physx card, from when ageia was running the show and not nvidia. the drivers are pretty much the same though

oohh ok...
yes it is a dedicated PPU but as I say a nvidia GPU will also do the same job. the physx drivers are downloaded seperate and dont include gpu drivers so this will not install any unwanted drivers for nvidia GPU's and only activates the physx chip nothing more. :soda:
to clear it up here is the link for just the physx drivers for GPU's and PPU's. You need an earlier driver version for ageia card but nvidia cards require the drivers below.

I've read you can just use a NVidia that way yeah, but if you can still pick up a seperate they work also.
I still have an old ASUS P1E PHSYX, that I used to use for my HD4870x2 for it.
Unfortunately, I managed to frig that card up, so waiting till the 5 series come out and might try it with one of those.
Still have it in here with a 260, and let it run all the PHYSX atm.
It still accepts all the PHYSX driver updates over time I've gotten off NVIDIA site at any rate.
I deleted the PHYSX drivers after installing the card here, then installed them again on the PHYSX card afterwards as it was showing up in hardware management as a mystery item. Not sure how you might do it with a set of vid cards, maybe install the one you want the PHSYX drivers on first then add the other cards after.

well usually when you run the driver install for video drivers it unpacks em into the C drive in an nvidia folder and i've noticed that theres seperate physX installers within this folder that can be run seperatly.
i imagine you could probally install it that way if it wasnt getting confused about a videocard in your computer ther was physX able. but its possible (and highly even) that it would get confused
