Hi guys I'm kinda have some extra money to shell out for an extra card.

Which one would serve me better in terms of performance? Buying another 4890 and crossfire w/ my existing 4890 card or get a GTX295?

Are there issues with crossfires on some games?

4890 crossfire would be a little better then the gtx295 and way better when overclocked :) and are you buying these after the 5XXX series release?

I plan of buying this sooner..

When is the 5xxx release?

Although I have used both 4890 crossfire and GTX 285 SLI, I really liked it them for gaming. Overall a single card solution is less noise and heat. So I'd say +1 for the GTX 295. Get the CO-OP version.

Just Wondering, would Batman runs great on GTX295 because of the PhysX? Or same quality as ATI HD4890?

Anyone care to answer the question above??

Perhaps not many people know the answer to the question, hence why no ones answered.. I know I personally have no clue, but I'd say it wouldn't make a huge difference in all honesty.. From what I've heard about PhysX, its still more a gimmick.. But thats from what ive heard/interpreted.. If someone else has something to say about it, please be my guest and correct me!

You already have a HD4890 in your system, so the logical upgrade is a second HD4890, theres no need to buy a new card just like that...

ORRR wait a week or two, and see how the new ATI cards go, and perhaps just look at upgrading to one of those instead (i.e. HD5870).

Thanks! I also don't think it would make a big difference in performance.

I'm towards getting another 4890 after the new cards from ATI comes out. I know it will lower the prices of the existing cards. Also I'm not going to get newer card that support dx11 since it will take years for developers to have a game for it.

That was the first thing I noticed makeing the move from nvidia to ati. Explosions in cod5 lacked the shockwave, artillery strikes didnt look the same. The 4890 is a pretty strong card, with alot of bang for the buck, but make no mistake, the 295 is an absolute beast. 2x 4890s would be fun tho, I think.

Neither. Wait for 5 series ATI cards.

Crossfire/SLI I hate and is a waste of money to me on resolutions 1920x1080 or less.

+1 for wait for 5000 series.

I woulden't bank on CUDA unless you really need it. I think its gonna die off in the next gen or two.

Why not wait for gt300?

Im sure it will give the good folks at ATi a run for its money :)

I'm getting the GTX295, simply because it beats the 5870 in most benchmarks still.. I know its a bit early for drivers, but that chip is essentially a 4870 chip doubled over, which is pretty much predictable in performance... The 295 still kills the 5870 where it matters... ;)

And yes, I know it costs an extra $100 for the 295, but if i'm gonna spend that money, might as well go all out. :D

I say wait for the 5XXX series to come out and buy a 4890 (they'll be cheaper)! his will be the best bang for you buck!

Sure the 5 series will be faster and two 295s would be nice but don't you want to get your money's worth? Tossing a 4890 out would be stupid and selling it would just leave you at a 50% loss.

Two 4890's in crossfire will run any game out there on the highest settings (at 1280 x 1024 which is native resolution for the majority of LCD monitors). So any more money spent in excess would result in demenishing returns here.

There will always be something faster, get whats best for your money.

edit: Crossfire will work nicely with your cpu too btw

i woudl've thought the mainstream screen size is somewhere around 22" or 1680x1050 nowadays. at this res 2 4890s would still max out most current games, depending on CPU though.

EDIT: sandyduff, come to think about it...all the computers at my school have 1280x1024 screens as well :p

I would say 1280x1024 or 1440x900 is about normal in LCD land.

Exactly, if you take every LCD monitor on the planet the average is probably 1280x1024 or 1440x900 (widescreen, like my laptop!!) But if you take the average of users on this forum... the norm is usually at least 1680x1050...

Yes, I got the EVGA GTX 295 Co-Op already. I'm happy with it! I play Crysis Warheads ultra max settings on my samsung 23" monitor res 2048x1152.

lol yeh true.
whenever i think about these stats, i make the assumption from what ppl here on OCF have...but then again us gamers/enthusiasts are only a minority of people. :p

but yeah tha'ts where my 22" 1680x1050 stat came from.

Just an update: I returned my GTX295 and got a store credit.. Since it's future proof to just wait and get a HD5870x2 or GTX300..

although I enjoyed the card and able to get 27800 score on 3DMark06..
