sounds pretty interesting. thoughts?

Seagate Barracuda XT (6Gb/s) (http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=null&vgnextoid=d190ff72f68c3210VgnVCM1000001a48090aRCRD )

new interfaces make me giggety.. i dunno about this "fastest drive" thing, maybe "highest bandwidth", but like when 3gb came out it didnt instantly make those drives the fastest. the old raptor still had its 10k and nice access time. maybe in a uber raid u could see some cool numbers. 64mb cache? plzzz.. a gigabit ethernet cable isnt gonna do much for your 10/100 card.

It states sustained rates at 140MB. That is the fastest single mechanical drive out yes? Maybe not in seek but in transfer rates I believe it is. That is where the 64mb cache comes in to play.

my thoughts..heh, well, though it is a fast arse drive, it certainly didnt warrant the need for another sata interface.

hopefully these drives are problem free.

very very small market for this one

my first thoughts now when i see anything from seagate and their firmware fiasco, it will take some time before i trust them again.

but a new interface was not needed! if SSD can use SATA2.....

couldnt agree more about my trust lost in seagate after their firmware crap and the two 250gb 7200.10's that i had just go kaput on me.

and who cares about 6gbps sata on a mechanical hd... we havnt even completely saturated SATA1 let alone sata 2 with mechanical hds.

I wanna see some benchmarks on this drive, i bet its got good STR numbers, but falls flat on its face when it comes to overall performance just like every seagate hd since 7200.11 was introduced.

Gimmy SATA III on SSD's then we'll talk.

No way it can saturate 6GB/s. Seagate Ships World's Fastest INTERFACE Desktop Drive

SSD>everything.

this is definitely just a stunt by seagate to grab a headline but who cares. seagate didn't develop sata 3 just for this drive. sata 3 was developed completely independently and is very much needed for ssd's. right now ssd manuf are working on other performance issues but by next year they will saturate sata 2.

seagate just happens to be the first to market with a sata 3 interface. in 2 years all drives will be utilizing a sata 3 interface so I wouldn't say there is no market for this product.

todays performance advantage will affected more by the 64mb cache than sata 3 but that doesn't bother me.

all things considered this is good news as the sooner this product gets out there the more quickly everyone else will jump on board.

For sure! At first I was skeptical about the SSD, but after having one for a week or so.... WANT MOREEEEE :bang head

oh please, one problem in the past and people all of a sudden have minds like steel traps.
alot of the other companies that make the products in your sig have had similar problems in the past but your still using them arent you?

very very small market for this one

very small for now, SATA3 is becomming a standard

uh ONE problem... there were tons of reports of problems with just about model of the 7200.11 drive out there. thats a BIG problem if you ask me.

I am well aware that every computer part has problems upon release. But with some brands there tends to be less problems than others and better customer support to fix those problems. OCZ, EVGA, and Corsair have great customer support.

^^^

It wasnt just a small problem tho, some time has passed, and its easy to shrug off now, but when it was happening, it was happening to everyone who bought that model. It was the Ford Pinto of mechanical drives :D

What I mean by that is, that it wasnt just a small number of the model affected.. it was all of them, from what I can recall.

Freeagent, which model are you referring to?

Im guessing he is talking about the firmware update on the 1TB/1.5TB drives. If its that, it didnt effect all of them, but the new firmware was for all of them just in case.

It was an earlier model, im not sure exactly wich size it was, but it made alot of people cranky at the time! It was a midsize drive, maybe 320? or 500, maybe even bigger? I cant remember exactly offfhand. I just remember being glad I went with a WD at the time, instead of model X, wich I think I contemplated because of the price. I went with a smaller WD250 so I could have some drinking money or something that weekend, sorry its been awhile!

Edit:

I should have mentioned that the wd ended up failing, and was terrible in raid lol. The array kept comeing undone heh.
