i want to disable windows messenger

what do i do? need to do this in a friends machine but i couldnt find a way to not let it start at startup.

WinXP is similiar to win98 and ME.

go to run and type in "msconfig" with out quote.
then go to startup programs. you could remove it there.
becarefull tho some of them you would want to leave.

I have had problems on a friends machine by stopping windows messenger - big slow downs on a 1.4GHz!

You need to head over to www.tweakxp.com and in one of the threads you will find how to uninstall messenger or disable it if that's your choice. you have to do it right or it will slow down you outlook express (if that's what you use for email). Actally it's a great source for all kinds of XP stuff.

You can also go http://www.xp-antispy.de/ and download xp anti spy which will either delete ms mesenger or stop it from starting on startup, and it will also remove other ms spyware.

you can also uninstall it by editing the sysoc.inf file. replace all the " ,hide " with " ,, " (without the quotes) and it will then let you uninstall it from the add/remove software section in the controll panel.

Maybe it is too simple but you could just go into Tools, Options, Preferences, and uncheck Run This Program When Windows Starts.

good to know there r many ways to remove it. i was expecting some registry entry. also, i expected tweakui could do that.
will try out one tonight.
