View Full Version : NIC Recemendation
Ok i just got Sympatico HSE and aparently they changed their policy to no longer send out NIC with set up kits. So now i need a NIC. What brand should i use?
I've had great luck just buying the cheapest one I could find. I found a place that has brand new ones for $9 each, they are brand X but they work fine, at full speed and everything.
If you want a bit more quality, I've used the 3COM ones with no problems. When I was IT manager at my college that was all we used on campus.

get a D-Link one they are the best, if you want to spend another $30 get a 3Com one which is the same speed but has extra features but are only used in a business environment

I picked up the basic Linksys LNE100TX - EtherFast® 10/100 LAN Card for $15 at Office Depot. It's a great card. No frills, no problems.

They're almost all based on the same chipset so there's not much difference. I've had great luck with Linksys cards that cost under $15. Some of the high end cards will go a wee bit faster in very heavy load situations, but the difference is marginal even under the worst conditions and totally inconsequential for home use.
I use a 3com for ISP and a D-Link for network.
Go for either of these brands:
3Com
LinkSys
NetGear
Intel
Hmm I think I'm forgetting some but those are the most common as they already popped in my head first.

GVC is another brand you should consider. It's a Canadian company, and they use a realtek chipset on them. Should be able to pick one up pretty cheap. I have an Aopen NIC (realtek chips in both of my machines, so far (1 year) no probs. 3-com cards can be a little twitchy depending on the model you get and which OS you have. Intel NIC's are probably the top end of the bunch, but you'll also pay through the nose for one.
